I hear ya, and theres nothing wrong with it. It's something many find really interesting, but on the first date? That's a bit creepy.
Yeah, I'd probably do something a bit more classy...like take her to that musical performance, Stomp. But I wouldn't take her to dinner on a first date. Funny story: My parents met through a blind date set-up. They met at a bowling alley with their mutual friend, both aware that they were going to see each other. What does my dad do? Come to the bowling alley in his torn up football jersey, cut off shorts made from his old navy uniform slacks and flip flops. I love hearing that story sometimes because it's just too funny.

If I was on a blind date and the guy dropped that he was MtG World Champ... I might just skip the dinner part and move right to the dessert hahaha. Look how cute!:

Geek dates blogger, blogger blogs about it, internet rages.

She hardly says anything half as scathing as the people who knee jerked to her recap of her two dates. Plus, tickets for a one-man show based on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer?s life story... what a shit first date. The Magic Geek has no game! Being obsessed with a card game is plenty of reason to not date someone. As she mentioned, she wouldn't have even bothered had he been upfront on his profile about this 'important' part of his life.
i'll agree that a show about a serial killer is a shit date... unless maybe the 'one man' was a good friend/relative of the guy. and he's not 'obsessed' he plays it. he might play professionally. if so, thats like calling a lawyer 'obsessed' with the law.

Wow... there are articles on Forbes and Wired already about this.

Well, if she wasn't a famous journalist before this, there's a good chance she will be now. Of course, she'll be famous for being a vapid twunt, but hey, beggars can't be choosers...
The word isn't famous. It's 'infamous'. Just to inform you.

OT: This kind of bullshit is why I don't watch TV or even admit I'm an avid gamer to many people outside of my friends, because people always assume that every gamer is the exact same type of person. Yeah, some people let video games consume their lives and don't do much else, but some of us actually play games alot on weekends or when we have time off, because we're busy the rest of the time!

With this guy who plays MTG, it's the same thing! I never played Magic (I played Yu-Gi-Oh; I'll wait for you all to applaud my unique-ness =w=), but fuck if you make money off of it, that's something to be proud of. That girl doesn't even deserve him, and he doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. I'm pretty sure this is cyber-bullying somehow, even if he's not upset by it (Which I'm fairly certain he is). By the way, maybe her dad is the head of Sarif Industries.

*head desk*

I don't have words for this and how angry I am. As a female geek this drives me mad.

I understand that due to his love of MtG you may have less common ground, but it is one of many interests. You could, ya know get to know him and see what they are. Yes, many of he has many friends who play MtG, its amazing what happens when you put a group of people with at least one common interest in a room together. They talk! Who knew! Many times they will even spread to other topics depending on how much time the spend together. Lastly, the tournament that weekend. She sites ONE weekend. Apparently that is enough to take up all of his time. Now granted, many of us geeks will go to as many of these as possible, but he/she will often make time for family and relationships (provided they are healthy and good relationships). Maybe she should have gone after the leg man. I think they would have hit it off perfectly.

This is why i said "fuck you" to dating.

i've had a date before. a 45 minute date that ended the next day with the lady dumping me because i talked about games, which she played, and the fact my nicest clothes consisted of a clean plain t-shirt and a pair of clean jeans.

Couple of things annoyed me here. First, if I was single and met someone online, and found out "oh my god shes JANE FUCKING DOE, striker for the England woman's football team/Leading Investment banker/MP for Stoke." then decided to not date her just because shes into something im not, people would have the legal right to smack me for being so fucking stupid. Its not just some random nerd, its the random nerd that makes a fortune playing his random nerd game. God..

Second, I like the "LOL i was drunk so i made an account lol ^_^" No, shut up, you were lonely and wanted to meet someone, noone thinks less of you for it, stop lying to save face that doesn't need saving. You look more desperate for it.

and last, YOU WORK FOR A GAWKER WEBSITE?! WHAT STANDARDS DO YOU EVEN HAVE?!

I never tried Magic: The Gathering, and I don't really care for card games anyway, but what's the difference between MTG and any other hobby? For example, I play drums on a very high level. I spend hours every day playing. He spends as much time on his hobby. What's the difference?

Sheesh, what a *****. I usually try my absolute best to not use foul language here, but I can't help it here. If her vagina isn't filled to the brink with sand, no ones is.

I apologize for that, but it had to be said. Geez, what a disgusting woman.

Dude must be loaded if he can afford to play MTG competatively :p
Part of the reason he's loaded is because he makes money off winning the tournaments. The journalist even failed at being a golddigger.
And I mean, let's get real he's the world champion of MTG. That's pretty bloody impressive to be the best in the entire planet at something.

If I met a girl who was the world champion at something I don't care about, let's say a makeup artist or something, I'd be damn well impressed.

Wow, I guess the girl is just terminally retarded/shallow/ignorant (delete or add to as applicable). I wonder just how perfect Ms Judgmental is herself?

Wow he's really handsome.

I think it's pretty hilarious. if some guy I was expecting to be some totally boring business man said 'I'm the MtG champ.' That would seal the deal for me. Nothing hotter than someone who does something they legitamately find fun and does it well. :)

I thought the woman was really shallow and a horrible person. I'm glad he got away from her to be honest. Total cow.

This is exactly why I try to be friends with people from dating sites before actually dating them, too many crazy judgmental women out there...

To be fair, the guy's not a 'hobbyist.'

The man is a professional player of the game. Hobbyist implies he spends some money and hangs out with the boys.

This is how he makes his living. He is a professional gamer, no different than a professional bridge champion, or any other professional game.

That goes well beyond 'hobby'.

Ya I dont see a single problem at all with what she wrote. I did not see his actual name anywhere in the article. That would have been the only problem I would have with it anyways.
mention him you say? "The next day I Googled my date and a wealth of information flowed into my browser. A Wikipedia page! Competition videos! Fanboy forums comparing him to Chuck Norris! This guy isn't just some professional who dabbled in card games at a tender age. He's Jon motherfucking Finkel, the man who is so widely revered in the game of Magic that he's been immortalized in his own playing card." -Alyssa Bereznak

even if she didn't it would not really be hard for anyone to find out who the mgt champ is. : p

She aslo said he lied on his okcupid profile by not telling everyone he was a world champ mgt player. Writing something like that on a dating site would be a bad choice for getting dates.

Its not the issue that she didn't like him becuase of MtG it's that she slagged him off publicly for it. Anyone else would just say 'Ah well that didn't work out' Not go and destroy their character online.

Doesn't she have any manners or grace at all? She isn't a lady that's for sure.
