Here's my own version of Captain Cortez Of the Crimson Fists [http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Alessio_Cortez] The original GW model is dogshite, but I love the character and the fluff too, as he was in the 3rd Edition Codex which was my first, but has been left out ever since

I like the face on him, really nice job, even with the picture slightly out of focus it looks really detailed. Was is a a base of grey (hair and beard colour) painted over with flesh to get that effect? Also what blue are you using?

When my lazy ass tears itself away from TES IV I have an old beetleback 80% finished and he will be making an appearance soon with his 2 friends in my finally completed 1st Warlord Titan battlegroup (and it's only taken me 18 years ).

The faces of the standard bearer and of Captain Cortez are layers of scorched brown, then bestial brown, then bronzed flesh, then a wash of brown followed with highlights of a mix of bronzed flesh and white. The hair and beard stubble are just layers of thinned down gray, built up slightly more for the hair than the beard

I'm annoyed the camera didn't show Cortez's face as well as I'm pretty pleased with his horribly scared face I just couldn't face taking any more of him, they were the best I could get after loads of attempts that's to my ancient camera :|

The armour is just Regal Blue highlighted with Ultramarines Blue.

Hopefully I'll have a squad of Sternguard up tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff, the standard of the stuff on this thread puts me to shame

Much as I hate space wolves, space wolf characters in particular, thanks for posting. Yeah, getting lighting right is a real pig. Personally I think the best is natural light, outside during the day while the sun is out, although seeing as I usually only paint in the evening and I'm always in a hurry to take a photo and post I never actually use it.

Question: Do you use some sort of sheeted grass that you glue on? It doesn't look like your typical static grass that you glue on to me?

Yeah, I had a big MDF gaming table when I was a kid that was covered in grass paper so I used that for the bases as well and I have carried on the tradition.
