Right, time for some more serious titles--check out the thirty-some episode Wolf's Rain series, about a pack of wolves surviving the dangers of a dystopian future in the disguise of human beings, and Blood+, a spin-off to "Blood: The Last Vampire", which was a big movie hit. Both have quite a few interesting twists, and the former is quite tragic and I recommend bringing some tissues.

One outs, kaiji and akagi are pretty damn great, quite similar aswell. (akagi and kaiji have pretty wierd artstyles, made by the same bloke.) all of them are gambling related, and also pretty short.

gintama if you like comedy anime, really wierd humor and has shit tons of anime referances so it's not really for people that don't watch tons of anime. (long one tho)

hellsing is also a good sort of dark anime.

Not really to into sci-fi anime so won't try to recomend more than this. : p (I agree with others mentioning death note tho, worth a watch.)

Samurai Champloo (comedy/action) [From the makes of Cowboy Beep Boop ]
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (Horror/mystery) [If you want any answers from this show you need to watch both seasons]
Black Lagon (Action)
Panty and Stockings (I don't think there is one for this show)
Deadman's Wonderland (Action)
Darker then Black (Action)
Durarara (Action)

Not so grown up but still good
Mitsudomoe (comedy)
World God Only Know (comedy) [don't let the title fool you it's actually all about an elite gamer]

Also to my knowledge Black Lagon is the only one with good english dubs adn I'm just not sure if the dubs for Samurai Champloo are good just that there are.

Most of them are 26ep long a few have a second season that is the same length

Not Sci-Fi, but still amazingly amazing.

Hellsing. The OVAs have 6 (I think, more might have been released since I last checked), and the Anime (which isn't as good) has 13 eps, all in English.

Hellsing is the english "anti magical creatures" agency. Their most powerful agent is Alucard, a vampire. He has a daughter vampire (by which I mean he drank her blood to turn her into a vampire) who is also a member of the organization. Lots of shooting, gore, and zombie/vampire nazis (I shit you not) ensue.

ZOMBIE...NAZIS... DO IT!

Full Metal Alchemist (I'd recommend both FMA and FMA: Brotherhood, but if you want to stick to the orginal manga, then go for FMA: Brotherhood)

Wolf's Rain.

Highschool of the Dead (if you're bored and like zombies and a boat load of fanservice).

Durarara!(26 episodes, and you can watch them on youtube)

A lot of people I know enjoyed Beserk (I think that's what it's called).

Not sci-fi, but I enjoy them.

Might a recommend the rest of the Gundam series? There's Gundam Seed, Gundam SEED Destiny etc.

That is all.

I need something to fill the hours of work where the phone isn't ringing.

As for what i like, here's a list of some i've been watching and enjoying lately

Gundam 00
Rin; Daughters of Mnemosyne
Ergo Proxy
Code Geass
Tenga Toppen Gurren Laggan
Planetes
Ghost in the Shell (Every episode/movie)
Evangelion
Trigun
Gungrave
Casshern Sins
Elfen Lied
Macross Frontier
Geneshaft

Preferably want more grown up sci fi stuff and as few episodes as possible. No 300 episode epics please, i don't have *that* much spare time.

Thanks!

*EDIT*

I should clarify that these are anime i've watched/re-watched in the last 12 months not all the anime i've seen ever.

Love Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star as much as the next person it's just a general list of the kind of anime i've been in the mood for.
I suggest Gundam seed, or Gundam Wing. If you haven't seen it, Code Geass R2, FMA and FMA brotherhood, and Busou Renkin. If you don't like at least one of those, I will eat my hat.

Hellsing *is* awesome. Speaking of, anyone know when the hell the last few episodes are coming out? It seems to have vanished.

A buddy of mine said the next one is going to be out later this year. I can't remember where he got the info through, so it might not be correct.

Seeing how you like Gundam 00, you could check out the recent new Gundam show Gundam AGE.

I must warm you however that it's competely different to 00 (but yet again every Gundam show is different to one another).

The protagonist is a just a kid and there's only one Gundam as oppose to four (however it got changable limbs which in another way is a new Gundam altogether) and the show itself is targeted to the kid.

Gundam Age is interesting in that the show itself spand into three generation with the protagonist, then his son and then the next son after the second (so it's like son, father and grand father) so that still bring out three Gundam's.

This does not mean that show itself is kiddy but I would say it probably less dark compare to 00 but there is still angst type of stuff in it.

I'll give it a look see.

I like the Gundam series mostly because of the attempts to make the technology presented plausible. Anything with more of a hard sci fi bent is also good.
