I hate escort missions especially. I love how Half Life 2 Episode 1 did it where there was a mission where you were going through a dark underground with only a gravity gun and a shotgun with limited ammo. A smart person would conserve the shotgun bullets until the chapter's finale. So, since the area is extremely dark, you shine your only flashlight on zombies and Alyx would shoot them pretty damn efficiently too. I didn't even have to watch her the entire game and she handled herself in a fight really well. If a zombie got too close she would do this badass close quarters instant kill on it instead of standing screaming like most games do. If a strider or something came along she had the decency to stand back and let you take care of it because she lacked the fire power. Valve made me happy on that game.
If I remember correctly, someone at Valve has stated that the bit in HL2E1 was designed as being a "reverse escort mission." That is, you're supposed to be the worthless NPC with the two support moves that needs to be protected, while Alyx is the baddie-killing badass. The same idea crops up again in Episode 2 where she takes the sniper position and provides covering fire while you try to work your way forward.

Anorexic females in fantasy games that, be they mage, cleric or warrior, are wearing absolutely sod-all. It's just NOT a good look.

I know that's more of a stylistic choice than a game design choice, but it's all I've got for now.

Those missions where you have to defend something for x amount of time tend to piss me off as well.
I can't stand those either, with the possible exception of Tower Defense games.

Also, if you ever played Twilight Princess, you know precisely what I'm talking about when I say I hated the Sacred Grove bit, and more generally incredibly fiddly and irritating boss fights/puzzles in general.

Oh yes, and also that BS where sniper scopes waver around, like your character has had a few shots of whiskey.

Timed missions.

Jak 2 was filled with them and I can't tell you how many migraines this resulted in. It was a good game, but those fucking timed mission needed to fucking die.

Not being able to save/load whenever I want. (This is thankfully rare in PC games though)

Direct from console ports with only a minimum of conversion work to PC.

Rail shooting sections. Especially if you have to shoot everything around you within a certain amount of time or else it's game over.

Stealth sections where you have to remain undetected, otherwise it's game over.

Stealth sections/games where you can't kill a guard or two covertly/silently without raising the alarm/alerting everyone.

Companions that bugs out/don't help allot.

Infinitely spawning enemies.

Sections that you have to finish within a certain amount of time.

Child characters are my #1 turn off in a game.

Second would probably be timed missions.

Third are random quicktime events with no warning.

3D Platforming is right there with RPGs as my favorite genres. However, I despise it when games with platforming in them don't give you control of the camera. That's rule #1 of 3D platforming.

God of War's platforming can go straight to hell. I don't mean the kind of "go to hell" where some coincidence stops your fall halfway down and then you climb back up to safety. Not that. Go to hell and stay there you miserable, poorly-implemented platforming. Die a horrible death with your lack of camera control and (worse) changing camera angles while I'm in mid-jump.

-Shoddy hit boxes
-Timed events
-Forced stealth
-Forced stealth that, when caught, you lose instantly and don't put up a fight. (flips off Legend of Zelda)
-Puzzles in non-puzzle games
-Incredibly hard to see snipers
-AI with fuckloads more health than you
-AI with unlimited ammo
-Ability for AI to use some vehicle/weapon/sequence that you can't use

I hate X!

sorry bad joke

nothing specific really; broken game mechanics/controls or anything that doesn't fit with the game like randomly putting 1 driving mission in Bourne conspiracy, that was a good idea :-/

God, I hate limited hair selection in character creation...in games.
Nothing irritates me more. It honestly caused me to put off playing Dragon Age for a few days after I bought it because I hated all the hair.
Hair is important, it is one of the first things you will notice about a character when it is visible and it will make a lasting impression about the character. There is absolutely no reason why I should have a dozen different sliders to mold the exact shape of the left side of my collar bone, yet they only give me five stupid hair styles to choose from. Five stupid hair styles that aren't even unique as a third of the NPCs in the game will have whatever style I chose as well.
Why does my Dwarf, a born Noble who has never seen the world above ground, have the same style of hair as a decrepit old chantry lady clear across the land? Why do the two of them have the exact same hair style as an elf huntress deep in the middle of a forest?
Screw the rest of the character creator. Throw me a couple presets for the parts of my character everyone will stop noticing after five minutes and dedicate the rest of the effort into making fifty different hair styles to randomize things a bit.

SILENT PROTAGONISTS (with huge exception of Gordon Freeman. He can pull it off)

But to the rest of you: Will you please just F***ing speak, don't be shy, we won't laugh at your voice, Jesus...

I hate Console Ports in games. They are generally terrible.
I hate cinematic's which show the players character wearing different outfits and weapons then what they actually had on.
That annoys me too. It happens alot in action games where you kill a boss with something like an RPG and a minigun, and it switches to a cutscene where the guy is on his knees at your mercy, and all you have is the starting pistol.

It's worst in games that don't turn off physics for the boss, so you empty out your minigun on him, launching him into the wall and causing him to slump over after you run out of ammo. Apparently he survives that though, because the cutscene starts and he falls down with one bullet wound to the chest that the hero gave him with the starting pistol.

When I realize I need something they made out to be optional (or without it it's not possible/fun). Things like REQUIRING co-op on one bit and without it I can't complete the game or realizing multilayer is the main part of game itself - such as the call of duty games recently - loved the single-player bits until i realized nobody will shut-up unless you play the multilayer as well and being constantly bugged into it annoyed me since I didn't enjoy the multilayer at all. Or in dead rising 2 (which i never completed by the way so don't kill me if it's at the end or something but my point still stands that i should have free access to it single-player whenever i want <.>) I loved the early bit where you killed zombies galore in a stadium while riding a motorcycle with chainsaws on the side!
WHY did they design other awesome versions of this game in the stadium - but they're ALL multilayer and i never find anyone playing on windows live!

Unskippable things. That is, either intro cinematics, cutscenes, generally things I don't care about.
