So a literal lighting bolt came down and smote this memorial on a sunny, partially cloudy day where there was no rain or thunderstorm.

I guess that thing about false idols has some credence to it XD.

Doesn't matter, there are 1000s of more memorials every where in the states.

Not shocked really. I've read enough of the OT to know YHWH/God is basically a giant asshole.

Unless that's some other god, which means either the OT/NT god is an imposter.

We could also blame it on Zeus or Thor or Marduk or natural weather phenomena if that pleases you.

Doesn't the Old Testament acknowledge the existence of rival deities that Yahweh is replacing?

Lightening strikes aren't a rare occurrence in the slightest

Lightning strikes reach the ground on Earth as much as 8 million times per day or 100 times per second, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory. Out of all the lightning strikes in the world, the United States accounts for about 20 million of the total number of lightning strikes each year.
It's just a numbers game. I'm still waiting for my moment at getting hit, bet it must be one helluva rush.

Well no, clearly it's not Zeus or Thor, that's just crazy mythology nonsense! only the christian invisible sky daddy that smites people is a REAL invisible sky daddy! clearly! I mean gosh! To think otherwise is just silly! There's that book that clearly SAYS he's real, and it's written in that book, and the book says it's true, so, that's just fact! What's that? You say those other invisible sky daddy's also have books that say they are real? Pssh, clearly those are fictional works of a crazy person from the ancient times!

More or less. That line "Thou shalt have no OTHER gods before me" can be read as a tacit admission there are others to follow.

Apparently there has been some discussion of the Israelites having a Monolatrist religion, where they believe other gods exist but their particular god is the most powerful and the most deserving god of worship. After the babylonian captivity, the religion then became one of strict monotheism.

Naturally, this is disputed.

I think the story about the tower of Babel illustrates that fairly well, but a modern update would be cool.
Fun fact, a lot of religious people think the tower of babel story, is a lesson about human's hubris and arrogance, not an example of god being afraid of what we can do when we work together, and actively sowing division and discord into humanity, to prevent us from becoming a threat to him. Despite the actual texts. But, then again, they are really good at ignoring inconvenient details in their magical book, when it contradicts the fiction they've told themselves.

More or less. That line "Thou shalt have no OTHER gods before me" can be read as a tacit admission there are others to follow.
Perfect example of how they delude themselves that it says something else. They will say "no see you're misreading that. I doesn't mean there were other gods, blah blah blah, contradicts our monotheistic narrative, blah blah"

The Fritz Lang movie Metropolis(the Black and white one) actually has an interesting retelling of the story. Basically it recasts it as a labor dispute, that since the workers building the tower and the people overall in charge couldn't listen to each other, the workers eventually revolted and the tower was abandoned to rot. No supernatural take invovled.

Though the movie has a depiction of the whore of babylon and the Grim Reaper, along with allusions to hell in an industrialized power plant, so make of that what you will.

Yep, I recall Ricky Gervais saying almost the same thing to Stephen Colbert when he asked him about atheism. I like Colbert a lot, but it was really depressing (but expected) for him to drag out the same lame religious talking points yet again.
