GOG is having an ongoing press conference where they reveal that their website is leaving beta, and Baldur's Gate will be available for purchase DRM-free. Details are surfacing on their Facebook page.

I just literally facepalmed. This is just so stupid, yet I can actually see realistically how that would work, weirdly enough...

It wasn't lame, it was however very poorly judged. The whole premise of GOG.com was to revive older PC games and to treat customers with a certain level of respect with 100% DRM-free games. I think the community had come to appreciate this and thus take the sudden lack of respect shown through such a PR move a lot more personally.

It might have been lame, but now I know what GoG is...and will be using it.

Good show, CD Projekt, good show.

It definitely scored them cheap publicity. But unless you believe that no publicity is bad publicity, public relations took a hit. Of course I'm still going to jump back in line after all this.

I'm not quite sure why this happened - CD Projekt have been good at knowing their customers before, but yet this stunt has so blatantly misread the entire community (that cares) that it's hard to see how they could possibly have thought it was a good idea.

I don't get why everyone is acting like GOG killed their dog. So you couldn't re-download for a few days? You poor, poor souls. You STILL aren't going to find another place that offers DRM-free titles so you can quit crying and get over it, or embrace the DRM in all it's craptitude. They drummed up a lot of publicity this way, and they need it to stay competitive with Steam.

Might be their new marketing team. CDProjekt is major distributor on Polish market, some time ago they were re-releasing 2-3 year old games under the name of "Cheaper Game", eventually announcing it's death and how the whole idea is coming to an end only to re-brand it later on.

Thing is, whenever you find it lame or not, big part of major gaming zines grabbed the bait and wrote article about GOG.com being shut down. People that never heard of it were feed news about it.

Yeah, great stunt. it's put me off buying anything from them. How do I know I'll be able to get it without being interrupted by some shitty stunt?

Thing is, it's generally not a good idea to cut peoples access to downloading games they bought for several days as a joke. I know several people who found it so hilarious they won't be buying from GoG again. When you consider that most people interested in retro games probably already know about GoG, are they really going to bring in enough new customers to make it worthwhile? I don't know the answer to that, but I'm skeptical.

It's DRM free, I wouldn't be concerned. If they shut down permanently, just torrent whatever you bought from them if you need to get it again.

If you're gonna do that, then may as well torrent it in the first place.
No. DRM free and good prices, that's what you want with digital distribution. Convenient, no hassles. That part of the industry needs to be supported since that's where we want it going. We want good devs who respect their customers to be rewarded, and the bad ones who don't to be punished. If it has DRM and crap copy protection, don't pay them. If everything is made to be as convenient and hassle free for you as possible, and all at a good price, definitely pay them if you can.
