I personally like GOG more than Steam for three big reasons:
1: You don't have to run a client in the background.
2: Their customer service is awesome, and they genuinely do seem to care about you (they actually refunded me money when I couldn't get a game to work on my rig).
3: You can share games with friends. Since you literally download that actual game file to your computer, you can sign in on your account on a different computer and download any games you've purchased (or just give them your username and password).

I personally have issues with Steam and the times I used their customer support was worse then the time at the dentist when the freezing wore off.

I generally go to Humble Bundle, GoG, Origin, and then Steam.

Your issues with FFVII and FFVIII might not be with Steam. I still have to log in to Squeenix's servers if I want to play on my computer. I wouldn't be surprised if Squeenix's DRM was the problem.
It is Sqeenix that is the issue, but it is still not immediately obvious on Steam. Whereas everything on GoG is DRM free! So you don't have to read all the smallprint and worry about it.

I mostly use GOG due to their library of older stuff like Baldur's Gate and some old hidden gems. Heck, I got Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity on it. Steam just isn't very appealing, what with its DRM and Valve's inability to police a lot of aspects about it such as Greenlight.

I've never had a problem with Steam or GOG respectively. I like though that GOG has the option of using a client, but no actual DRM is involved vs. Steam needing to be present for any game bought through its client.
Otherwise I've no issue with either service. Both have been fairly good to me... horrible for my wallet though.

Whoever has the best sales for the games I want to buy is "the best" for me to be honest. I don't do fanboyism when it comes to those platforms.

Usually it's been steam the past few weeks, but I've bought from GOG as well.

I always like the Click>Download>Play aspect of Steam. The fact it is DRM does not bother me as I've never had a problem with it. (And with 32gb of Ram I don't care that it uses 100mb or such.)

Though GoG is the place to go for the older stuff as they make sure it runs on modern systems.
I have the King's Quest series on Steam and Gog. The former doesn't work and the latter is just as I remember from the good old days... :p

Gog's new client needs a bit of work and with some newer titles they can build up and become a good addition to online digital stores. If only they would accept Ideal, I hate to run around through paypal... :p

I like GoG. My mum doesn't have internet so when she wants a game if it's on Steam it's a no go, plus she really likes Bullfrog style games. GoG has made Christmas shoping so much easier.

Plus without GoG they may not have had the cash to make the Witcher series as they did so I would never have got Witcher 3.

GOG needs to push just that little bit harder to compete with Steam. They're owned by the same company that owns CDPR, but they're not exactly *open* about it. You have to do a smidgen of research on your own to find that out. This would give GOG massive buckets of positive PR yet they don't milk it.

They don't try and get every game they can. I don't expect to see the Elder Scrolls or Fallout on GOG because Bethesda is getting a hard-on for Steamworks, but come on! Dawn of War and Total War are PC staple series, everyone should sell those series.

You can't be a competitive market if you don't have a guaranteed cash cow. Thankfully, The Witcher seems to have done them well.

But yeah, they need more titles for sale in order to compete with Steam. I very much like GoG. In fact, I prefer it to Steam. I want them to be able to force Steam to double take and rethink they business method.

Initially the two were pretty different. Steam did its new-releases and Greenlight thing with DRM, and GoG released retro titles with built-in DOSbox emulation DRM-free. If not for the fact that DRM-free releases are a deal-breaker for most publishers which keeps a lot of titles off of GoG, I'd have no reason to make many purchases through Steam in the future. Unfortunately Steam is still the AAA and indie lead while GoG handles the retro market. Currently it's a PC ecosystem more or less, and I don't have any problems with that. Now in a perfect world publishers would stop holding titles hostage with DRM, something which would be good for all gamers, and that would allow GoG to go from a separate corner of the market to being able to wage 1:1 competition with Steam.

Overall, despite having fewer titles than Steam, I much prefer GoG solely from a business ethics perspective. CDPR released Witcher 3 through GoG, DRM-free and with free DLC; did CDP/R go bankrupt the next day? Be nice to your consumers: What a novel idea.

No GOG is not better than Steam, and this is coming from someone who really doesn't like Steam.

I don't really care about the game pricing or sales since I haven't seen anything that I would like to buy on GOG and I am still in region of someone who was forced to install the service to play their copy of Witcher 3 which means that I spend more time thinking about who slow the servers are, how crap it is when it comes to large updates, what a total cluster fuck the DLC listing and addon installation is (seriously I have only half the free Witcher 3 DLC actually installed despite asking it to install all of them.

So no it really isn't that good, but then Steam isn't really that good either, the main big difference though is GOG is Beta and still fairly new so it at least will hopefully get better. Steam is over a decade old and is a massive turd that has someone how managed to pile even more shit on to it over the last year or so and the chances of it actually getting better are pretty much none.
