Hello, next year im going into high school and I hear a ton of horror stories about it. So that got me thinking, what do people on the escapist think. So just list your best and worst high school experiences.

High School is the craziest, strangest, and downright most enjoyable thing you will ever experience. Probably. It's really a wild card, to be honest, but you'll be in for a roller coaster, regardless.

And that's just it - it can only be experienced. To tell you of it's oddities would pale in comparison to the actual experience, but I can only offer this bit of advice: Have fun. Don't be afraid to socialize with the student body. You'll meet a lot of people that way.

I'll be a Junior come next year, and so far, they've been some of the best years of my life. I don't regret it for a second.

First off tips, dont buy a pool pass, dont buy a elevator pass or anything like that crap, every school has it.

And my best story is I was on homecomming court, it was awesome.

Worst, i got cheated on, a lot, and was told i was "Too nice" and was broken up for it.

Not horrible. Make the right friends, stick with the right people, and beware the ghetto preggo girls who run into you then cuss you out.

It's not that bad, just make sure you don't fall in with the wrong crowd or give in to the peer pressure of others.

Meh. Horror stories are they, and like any tall tale, they have some small basis in fact, but it is just that: a small basis. personally, I literally didn't get hazed a single time my freshman year. I played football and baseball, went to football camp the summer before my freshman year, so I already knew some guys when I got in. You don't have to play sports, but find something to get involved in.

Like the rest of life, high school is much less interesting without friends. Get out there, meet people, and do your best to have a good time.

Oh, and just on a technical level, the classes are stupid easy. I skated by on minimal effort throughout high school and maintained a 3.5 GPA. I'd say the social aspect really is more important.

You'll have fun for a while. Then you'll go to college and be amazingly glad you're out of high school. Then you'll realize college is just like high school, but with smart teachers and education that doesn't suck quite as much.

EDIT: More info for you. Basically, socially, high school can be fun, but the drama of it tends to ruin it all. You'll have some good times, but no doubt some stuff will really, really suck. The two have different balances for different people.

Academically... well, if you're in America at least, it will suck. Real bad. The American school system in general just fails. Just look forward to when you can go to college and focus more on what will actually help you out in life.

oh god, generic response much?
Anything else you wanted me to say? I've been there, done that and there isn't much else for me to say.

Generic, but in her defense, quite true.

I never cared much for the social side of high school, proms and such are not really my thing, but academically I found it very interesting (Especially senior year economics/Amer. Gov't and English IV). Just hope that you don't get a teacher who grades unfairly (Like my econ. teacher) or is totally incompetent (Like my Spanish III teacher) or a teacher that lets the riley students trample over them so nothing ever gets done (Like my physics teacher). If you can avoid those teachers you should be fine.

Get a solid core group of friends and stick with them. Don't care what anyone else says about you or your group. Don't get in petty highschool politics... for lack of a better word. Don't rise to insults. Evoid fights. You know the same things you learn to have an easy time in ealier and later life. (also to not talk about fightclub...)

Most "horror stories" are just made up crap. Highschool is the same as primary just with more hair and generally more friendly teachers..

It's not that bad - if you're going to a place where a lot of people are from your previous school then you'll generally always have a few people you know in classes.

Trust me, after the first couple of weeks it's fine. You'll just be checking out the crazy amount of puss in the higher years. Besides, you have nothing on me; my Dad is both my maths teacher and the assistant head, so you won't have anyone coming up to you asking stupid questions like "does your Dad give you homework at home?" "No, of course not you f*cking moron."

Seriously though, chillax.

Do your homework (at least for the subjects you care about).

I know, I know, I sound like a nagging parent, but I'm dead serious here. I was smart. I understood everything I was taught, and reveled in my understanding.

Then I stopped doing homework, and after a couple of years I was lazy and stupid, putting in enough effort to pass and little else.

Do not, do NOT, let this happen to you. Have fun, make friends, enjoy the full 'high school' experience, AND come out smart on the other end. Not just for your future, but because when you're smart, you feel frickin' awesome.

Well, being English, I never attended a High School. However, I have seen High School Musical once, and from my understanding it is exactly like that! You will be surrounded by a weird cult consisting of fresh-faced teens. They are all wholesome, clean cut, and apparently carved out of wood. They will not let their forced smiles drop, except when they are a bit sad (and you will know they are a bit sad, because they will loudly sing about it just so everyone knows. High schoolers are attention whores, you see) and they spontaneously burst into (extremely aggravating) songs about the most mundane of tasks. Expect to hear the well-known a cappela rap 'I'm eating a turkey sandwich', perhaps a rendition of 'Oh no, my shoelace is untied' and of course the ever-popular among teens, 'Look at me, I have EMOTIONS!'. Worry not, young man, because the true lesson here is that everything is fine at the end. Status quo is restored, and you'll all get together and sing a little ditty about friendship and acceptance and whatnot.

Then you'll go on to make several sequels, a live show, release some albums and possibly have creepy, emotionless behind-the-scenes sex with Zac Effron. And that is High School.

Any questions?
