I abhor using my real name on any kind of social networking site, but it's nice to have a surname of some description on facebook. I've been using my own surname with a few of the letters switched around for a while now, but whilst reading a book The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, I noticed how cool Japanicized [is that a word?] names can look.

For example, the titular de Zoet was turned into Dazuto. Does anybody here have the inclination to do the same to my surname? A knowledge of the language would be preferable.
The surname is 'Kenderesi', which some people tell me already sounds somewhat Japanese.

Thanks =]

Can you reword the question? I've read that 3 times now and don't really know what your asking.

How do you Japanize a name? Surely it's the same in all languages? I don't understand the question I'm afraid.

I don't really know what you're asking, but phonetically, Kenderesi is correct, just a little different. It looks like this when broken down ; Ke-n-de-re-si.

If this didn't help, then I don't know what you're asking, sorry.

I think he also wants the name changed to fit Japanese phonetics.

Assuming you pronounce it "Ken-deh-rii-see", it would be Kenderishi, or ケンデリシ. The "n" sound should have a horizonal line after it, to make it a "long" sound, but I can't seem to get the correct character working. Anyway, there's not all that much difference with your name. Sorry. :p

Edit: Ninja'd, kinda.

It already does sound Japanese and it's made up of Japanese syllables minus the very end one (Ke-N-De-Re-Si) Si doesnt exist so it would just become Kendereshi- pronounced Ken-De-(R/L)eyshi. Not written as differently as you would have hoped I suspect.

You could try just taking syllables from your name instead?
Reishi (from the end of the name + its a type of mushroom)
Kenshi
Dereshi

Or Just add some syllables into your name.

Etc Thats about as much help as I can be just knowing hirakana/katakana without knowing how to actually speak Japanese

Japanese simple syllables:
A,E,I,O,U,N/M Ka,Ke,Ki,Ko,Ku Sa,Se,Shi,So,Su Ta,Te,Chi,To Ma,Me,Mi,Mo,Mu Na,Ne,Ni,No Ha,Ba,Pa,He,Be,Pe,Hi,Bi,Pi,Ho,Bo,Po

Course you have compounded ones too (syllable+syllable) and extended vowel sounds but I think the ones above should be adequate.

Actually guys, the name would be "Kendereshi"
The "si" sound don't exist in the katakana vocabulary (either the hiragana)

Edit : just saw the post above me

Yeah, like you said, it already sounds pretty Japanese. And like some others said, adding an 'h' might be clever.
