.......sigh. I'm gonna start playing WoW, again. I used to play it a coupe of years ago but lacked the patience to stick with any one class for too long. I then quit and vowed to play when I thought I'd be able to put the time in to play, because I do really like WoW. But I still haven't decided on what class/race to choose. I'm thinking caster but other than that I haven't gotten anywhere. So any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Nuuuuu! Ah do what you want, I won't go back.

I played it for 3+ years, got tired of it, jumped ship back two springs ago. Dropped out leaving 5 level 80 taurens. Just got too sick of the game all in all. The changes being made and were coming, the social atmosphere in most places, the Barrens chat, the idea that the almost wiped out blood elf race had more players then all other races put together and most were all in there beautiful 'ruined' city, the gold farmers ruining the auction, the twinks in battlegrounds (damn level 19 rogues), and many many more things. But thats just my opinion.

The last straw really was having my account hacked into, got it back after calling Blizzard, and then having it rehacked away from me again in the same week. (And YES this was when I had one of those Blizzard digital key things that was suppose to prevent that.)

I canceled my account this weekend since I don't plan on sticking around for Cataclysm. The game can be fun, but... after 5 years I really am not interested in going through my fourth spree of leveling, dungeon, and raid grinding. I just don't want to do that stuff anymore. x_x

Well, leveling is super easy now and the talent trees have been modified a good bit with the latest patch. Its just personal preference really, I came back to the game with a fresh account and rolled a rogue because I always believed they would be fun to play. What helped me decided what class was what race I wanted to play, and I think of what seems to flow naturally with that in my mind. So, if you wanna work of that, you could definitely consider Goblin or Worgen, unless you're ready to get your leveling on now. Also they are introducing new class/race combinations seen here: http://www.blogcdn.com/wow.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/580_raceclassmatrix_en_us.jpg

Course you could be a death knight, but that seems a little overdone.

I've quit and come back a couple times. Just started up again a few days ago because some local friends of mine are playing too, and it's fun playing together. Also I come back because the fact of the matter is that it is the all-around best-made MMO out there. Gripe about it however you want, it still beats all other MMOs (and I've put serious play time into about 9 others, so I have a pretty good idea what I'm talking about). Unfortunately, Blizzard is all too aware of this fact and it's hard not to feel like all they see when they look at me is a money-dispensing, obedient lapdog.

Warrior, it's easy as hell to level up.
However, the new talent trees lock you into your style for a while now (lvl 30 I think) so if you go prot warrior, you're a prot warrior.
(Prot is epixmode anyway ;D)
It was the last character I rolled before I finished my sub (80 lock, 80 DK) and I can say that having played a tank class makes the game so much more fun for me personally.
Flexibility in a class is awesome, unlock warlocks with their Seed of Corruption spam. Bleh.

Edit: Trolls are getting Druids. Troll + Druid = Doubleawesome.

The game is incredible fun but it took way less than 5 years for me to get sick of it. I wish I had a raiding guild to get into but I came in at the "You need this GS" bs and well, getting that GS is ridiculous sometimes.
Ah well, I'm long done, can pick it back up if i feel like it but Starcraft has me atm <3.

Hmm...so mage, priest, shaman, druid, or warlock, then.

Well, I know I'm going to be testing out the new warlock changes (they may have taken effect already, but my account's been deactivated for some months), and probably seeing if any effect has been had on my ice mage. And seeing how my budding shadow priest and as-yet-unaspected shaman will do.

Have you played any sort of caster before? If anything, my first suggestion would be something completely new. If you played a destructive mage, maybe trying out an ice mage? Battlefield control is an interesting role. Or if you played a demonology warlock, perhaps trying out affliction? I actually built my warlock intending to try the former, but fell in love with the affliction and DoT strategies, instead.

There are plenty of caster archetypes I haven't tried, yet (arcane mage, non-feral druid, destruction warlock, etc.), so I'm not sure how much other help I can be.

I used to play but i stopped because
1) it was too expensive and
2) i had played every race up to at least level 12 and didn't want to redo any of the quests

I never used that mod. Ever. I also never associated with anyone who used it either, or at least took any of those people even remotely seriously. Actually... I really looked down upon them. That... probably comes from the fact that someone could take one look at my character and say "yeah, that's more than enough" even before seeing me play. If some snob asked me for a "score", I'd just link them some achievement I had, which quickly got them to shut up.

And... that method was even more obvious when I ran into it on my warrior [http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Wyrmrest+Accord&cn=Ralkar] (Title).

But... at the same time being like that was not all it was cracked up to be. It kept me out of major cities so I could avoid whispers. >_>

It is quite irritating lets be honest, the demands of some people are atrocious. Especially when you're a first time raider and there is a demand for GS and the achievement of the run you were going to get.

They even made an addon so you can fake achievements just so you can get past that kind of attitude, I mean really now.
Something is so incredibly wrong when that happens.

Which is why one does not PUG, ever.

Exactly that. Just had a discussion with my friend yesterday about the nature of friendships as they pertain to MMOs.
Trust me, Blizzard isn't kidding when they say that they want you to make friends online; it's the #1 thing that seems to keep people in the game.

My argument? If you can do something with friends, do something more interesting than WoW.

Can you tell me how to make money then? I suck at it and I am a greedy bastard.

OT; Well, if you want to be broken as fuck, go rogue. Or warlock.
How come you think I know how to make money in WoW?

You looked my name up on Google didn't you? >_>

Caster DPS is kind of...overstocked. Or was, during WotLK. Maybe the sitch is better now. I'd go with Priest if you want to find groups easily, and thus gear up, Mage or Warlock if you want to do pure DPS.

For a cool mixture of playstyles, Shaman is great fun. But not very useful, often, sadly.

And if you don't wanna get bored and sleepy during raids, I strongly recommend going with either a complicated caster DPS (Affli lock/Shadow Priest), or a Tank, or at a stretch healer. But I really hate the healing system in WoW. It feels forced, and detached somehow.

EDIT: Sorry, you've played WoW before, you probably know most of this. Never mind me!

If you're unsure you could try a Shaman or Druid. At least then if you get bored of casting you can always spec into melee DPS or healing, or (if you're a druid) tanking. You could also go on WoW Wiki, or look up lv80 gameplay of the classes you're interested in. Generally, I find them all fun to play, but I really like the fast paced classes like the Mage and Rogue.

Ignore the whole "x class is broken" bullshit, play what you enjoy, and if you're taking PvP seriously you're playing it wrong anyway. The same goes for race.
