Going topless is overrated

I also feel uncomfortable going shirtless. I get uncomfortable walking into a store or restaurant (including fast food and gas stations) wearing a tank top. And it's not about having a hairy back or man-boobs since I now weigh less than I did in high-school.
Just feels trashy to me, and I have only a bike to get around town in a two-week long heatwave averaging 100 degrees so I'll ride shirtless but as soon as I'm off the bike, it's shirt time!

It's legal in Ontario to be topless in public. It's kind of a technical equality thing, if guys can do it, why not women?

That being said the only people I've seen take advantage of it are European tourists, older, heavier women all of them.

I dunno if I'd do it if men wouldn't make a huge f-ing deal about it. Even without the harassment, it would still be a little trashy in my opinion.

Women should be allowed to go topless if they want to. Up here in Canada, we're trying to change it so public nudity is not a crime or even a felony (I think).

I think the only reason it's lawfully unacceptable is because technically, a woman's breasts are considered genitalia. The only reason it's socially unacceptable is because of the long running idea of "modesty", and by extension, breasts have been associated with very intimate relationships.

So breasts were associated with sex which means that parents don't want their children learning about/seeing sex and try to keep exposed breasts away from them at all costs.

I was just talking about nudity today and how silly it is people react to it. I mean, what could be more natural than the human body? It's amazing how this puritanical sentiment has lasted so long in American society. Go naked! Be free! If you want.

I don't think women don't go topless because "it's overrated". It would still have a shit-load of stigma attatched to it, not to mention people would stare.

We've had our repressive ideas about "modesty" for centuries, it doesn't come and go depending on local law, it's also something that has fostered our boob obsession. In cultures where women go topless as the norm, they don't care to sexualise every bit of nudity.

People do get "offended" by nudity, not through logic, just because they've been raised that way. I know people who wear clothes to bed...in the middle of summer. I couldn't imagine being so uncomfortable with nudity, which I believe to be extremely comfortable.

I wear clothing to bed during the summer... of course it's not that warm here and I rather like feeling snug.

Also, the bit about nudity differs culture to culture. Some places that we deem as "third-world" have people nude or near to it. Of course, the reason being really has nothing to do with sexuality but due to their environment. For example, I believe there are some tribes in places in Africa that are still basically stone age and clothing is at a very minimal. This is just part of their culture (and lack of technology) and most importantly to adapt to their environment. Many of us live in places where clothing is just too engrained and necessary for us.
I understand that clothing is pretty great at protecting you from the cold. But I don't think it's simply a matter of climate deciding these things.

Afterall, we're obviously not open to doing whats most comfortable at any given time, we're inhibited and many have body shame and funny ideas about modesty...I'm pretty sure you could easily link these things to Catholicism and it's friends/rivals.

I'm basically pro-clothes in public, for hygiene reasons. I just think there's something fundamentally odd about people being uncomfortable with their own nudity, even in private...it's something I'm not convinced would exist so rampantly if it wasn't implanted in our heads by arseholes before we're developed enough to have evaluated things for ourselves.

Hey! Preacher/Teacher, leave those kids alone!

I wouldn't do it because I have a dark hairy torso and pale skin... the contrast is painfully noticeable when out in the sun XP

Lol. Yankee misconceptions. They're only allowed to be topless when they ride their polar bears to work...
The Naked News is based out of Ontario and they regularly have a "Naked in the Streets" segment where topless anchors interview people on public city streets. It's perfectly legal (copying uncited wikipedia entry) thanks to Ontario's top free equality laws. I know what I'm talking about. Wikipedia and Naked News haven't lied to me before.

Besides, my original point is that even if it is legal, most people wouldn't want to do it out of practicality. It is freaking Canada, after all. It's cold.

On a weird side note, no one posted on this thread until six hours after I wrote it. I'd forgotten about it.

I walk around my house topless when I'm alone, but I definitely wouldn't do it outside even if it was legal in my state. The last thing I want is gross men staring at my breasts. Let's just say that I live in an area that most of the old farts gather just to see the sorority girls dance in their panties at car washes. Like literally go to a coffee shop across the street and just STARE.

I get it...boobs are popular, but christ...

Hi, central Illinois fag here...

119 degree heat index today, and I was in a barn putting up hay for 10 hours today... shirtless, I love the soul crushingly hot weather and humidity so high your sweat just pools, separates the men from the boys I think.

I grew up in a really really rural area. Until a certain age kids of both sexes would go swimming naked all the time.
I'm sure now-a-days in the same area they don't do that for fear of sexual predators.

Topless? Who the fuck goes topless?

Pantless is where it's at.
And just to really drive it home, I present to you a hilariously exaggerated wink.

OT: I don't mind being shirtless when I'm home alone, or when I'm swimming, but apart from that I wear a shirt. I do not have a nice looking body, so me going without a shirt is hardly being eye-candy for straight women and gay men, and I'm really white (I don't tan well, I tend to freckle).

Of course, you've got your Jershey Shore douchbags who take off their shirt whenever they please.

So yes, over rated indeed

I haven't been to Vancouver, Canada, but isn't it legal for women to be topless anywhere in public?

In fact an even bigger misconception. You see, the penalty for going topless in Vancouver is death, but everyone in the city with a shred of common sense (including the mounties,) know that being topless for more than a few minutes would spell certain death from freezing, so it's only very rarely enforced.

When I lived in Germany, lots of women went topless at the English Garden or when sunbathing on the riverbanks. But people weren't staring at them in a sexualized way there.

In the US, there are numerous all-women's spaces (like the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival) or female-dominated spaces (like Tribe 8 or other queercore or riot grrl concerts) where women felt safe enough to go topless.

Very often women don't go topless because it isn't safe for them to do so.

I think your so close, I think its more that women are afraid that if every man is starting at them while topless, they will become desensitized to them and stop looking at them all together. So to that end, yes they dont want men constantly ogling them. Edit; That is of course those women of that persuasion who so find value in such things, however many there may be.

We don't have "felonies" here. That's the American legal system. And it is legal here. At least, in Ontario it is.
Laws in Canada are the domain of the Federal government, but something as pointless as 'clothing optional' zoning may fall into Provincial legislation. Honestly, I forget.
I used to know a lot more about Canadian law, but then I went to college and became retarded.
