please ignore that post then,
anyway, how about voodoo based storys? A lot of potential with Africa set games to bring that in.

The hindu mythology one sounds rad. So much source material.

Id love to see a game taking place in a Neil Gaiman style world. Where all Gods of all pantheons converge. Honestly, I think it would be best as an RTS. Kind of like age of mythology but taking into acount everything. American gods (read the book... like now), Native American spirits, Greek/Roman/Norse/Gaelic/Japanese/effin everything mythology. Even alien gods.
If we ever make contact, don't you think those beings would have their own belief systems? Imagine the trippy sheeze you could pull off when you aren't confined to either the physical realm or humanity.
There is an indian game developer working on a hindu myth based game, It's been a long time since I read the article on it, but someone is thinking along those lines, I am too.

I'd want to see something based on American mythology. We concentrate on these incredibly old stories from ancient Europe and Japan, but America has some good ones itself. Paul Bunyan, Patrick Henry, Pecos Bill, the list goes on. Just a game based on the age of the trans-continental railroad would have the ability to be full of material.

Possibly because the source material for a lot of other cultures mythology brutally pwns American folklore. There's just not much content for old Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill - especially compared to something like the Ramayana.

That's the problem when your culture is less then 400 years old - your legends and mythology are going to suck compared to cultures that have about 5000 years on you.

Example in point - name one story from American folklore whose story compares to this: The 7th incarnation of god is born, is exiled for 14 years to keep his family's honor, gets tested in exile, then returns from exile to lead a huge army against an evil king who kidnapped his wife. How awesome a game would that be? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rama)

Tell you what - you can have "Adventures on the Trans-Contintental Railroad" (featuring special appearances by Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan!), and I'll take the "Ramayana" any day.

Sounds like the book series Everworld. Good series, even if they are for like 10 year olds in length and difficulty, you should read them.
Except in American Gods, there's sex in pretty much every other chapter.

I like the idea of the Hindu game, that would be pretty cool.
I think a Doctor Who game would be awesome (I know there was one, but I mean fancy 3D and all that). Lots of different settings, and cool puzzles.

Eskimos (like, Alaska and igloos). go around fishing...riding in your sled pulled by a pack of trusty huskies...that'd be the life man.

pre-invasion Native America. like, a game about native american life way back in the day before the Europeans invaded. like Prey or Turok...but historically accurate (not in the Kutaragi-Kenji sense... IT'S RIDGE RACER).

i'd like an RPG that's based on midevil Europe, but in the Assassin's Creed sense - not the Tolkien sense. an RPG where i can actually learn about real history and real places...

i'm fucking sick of reading about kobold-orc relations in some fantasy DnD world. godamnit who the fuck has time for that non-sense - isn't actual history interesting enough!?!? are the crusades and other real wars not interesting enough that you have to go make up some shit about elves and orcs and crap to get off? WTF?

FUCK TOLKIEN. end rant.

god bless Assassin's Creed for taking on real history rather than worthless tolkien-wankage.

I think the gaming industry has run out of places to go, except maybe create a game out of the stargate franchise. Wait, they already id that. Another Guild Wars, yup theres one comnig out to. I think its time we thought up something that was completely original like your in a parallell universe where you are a unit in an RTS game and you have to do whatever the cruel overlord (ie player) wants them to do. It would be an interesting spin on the RTS game. Or just make CnC: Tiberium come out sooner.

to be honest, they cant really use things from religion too much, as it comes under ethical question too much. but there are some interesting situations and such, unfortunately, the incessant honking of religious people will hinder gamers forever. then again, if there were any properly religious games, there would be too many good morals involved, and would spoil it for me

I'm not sure you can make such a clear distinction between religion and mythology. Consider greek and roman mythology, for example - clearly about divinity, and about creation, meaning of life, etc.

Though its definitely 3rd source, check some of the definitions of mythology over time. Most match your criterion for religion. Especially when you consider than a lot of mythology does try to explain creation.

Edit: The American equivalent to mythology can be considered mother goose, leprechauns, Cupid, the groundhog, Jack Frost and Santa Claus, etc.
Almost all of the characters you named are not of US origin; the closest we probably have to mythological characters are Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed. Each character is purposed to have created something (digging the rio grande or painting the desert for Pecos Bill, creating the ten thousand lakes for Paul Bunyan, etc.) None of the characters you mentioned I'd consider mythological (check the wiki for some of the distinguishing characteristics of mythology).

What exites me most about FarCry 2 is that its set in rural Africa. Why game developers have mostly avoided the by far most interesting continent does baffle me.
At the risk of drawing some of the usual brays, Halo 2 and Halo 3 have lengthy portions set in Kenya; Mt. Kilimanjaro is a prominent landmark in the game's backdrops and in the backstory. I also believe that RE4 takes place in Africa, and drew flak for being "racist" because they dared to put black zombies on the African continent.

To do a complete 180, have any games been set in urban Canada?

-- Steve
I am very well aware of Halo being in africa, but honestly in those games it wouldent have mattered if it was in Siberia or Argentina

I believe you're thinking of "Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers." It was an old-school point-and-click adventure game that centred around Voudoun culture in New Orleans.
