Darker Than Black might be worth looking into for you.

It mostly alternates 2 episodes character-heavy story arcs, with an good over-arching story.

It's a very mature series, heavy on mystery and action. With a dose of philosophy thrown in to balance things out.

It's hard to describe anymore without giving something away, honestly.

I can definitely recommend this one, it's the best anime I've ever seen. Be warned though, season 2 ends kind of abruptly, right when you think the interesting stuff is going to happen. Just ignore season 2. I hope they make a third one, because we didn't get a real ending.

I love the way it pretty much ignores any semblance of having a fourth wall. The characters often mention other anime, anime characters, cult icons/figures/films and much more. In one episode, a character actually climb out of the animation frame to kill the creator of the anime!

I've never laughed so hard in all my life. It's absolutely fantastic.

Only thing I can heartly recomend is Soul Eater.

It sort has been my gateway drug to the rest of anime.

I do find though the less of a cliche' anime it is (in terms of character types, animation, and tropes) the more I like it, so my opinion I don't think is the best judge.

That's probably why he likes it.

I know I was just pointing out that a lot of people hated it.

As for me Im gonna say this; "This like so many other anime out there could have been so much better if they'd toned down the fanservice"

Also the dub of it is really good, they cuss more and make more jokes.

Clannad/ Clannad After Story, its my top of the list of animes and visual novels.

Hellsing has some funny moments mixed with action and an easy to follow plot the OVA's are where its out the series they made for tv is not even on the same level

I'm gonna recommend Blood Plus. 50 episodes, so it's already done, but the story is well done, and the characters fairly strong. You'll remember the villains more than anything else, if you're like me.
