Oh my god, there's a book that I thought I would forget... read that in the sixth grade as well. "Where The Red Fern Grows" oh my god...
I'm man enough to say I cried when I first read that book, so long ago.

And American Gods really threw me. In a good way.

That is indeed a good question. What makes a good book good? The Grue shall ponder...

1) Has to be captivating, needs you to want to keep turning the pages.

2) Creativity.

3) Believable characters with depth.

4) A good storyline.

Speaking of captivation, the Grue realizes it's getting much too late. The Grue shall retire for the night.

edit: The Grue forgot a key point:

5) CONSISTENCY!
You forgot to add '/thread'.

Stranger in a strange land it had 1/3 of cut because of the government not the editor but the government when it first came out.It made the reader question religion, government, even ones ideal of truth.

I enjoy books which had meaning in the imagery and the metaphors they use, the fact that the author took time to pick their words carefully makes its seem more worthwhile. This is more common in older books I've found and often have one over riding theme/idea/view. The curious case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde does this particularly well and is a great read.

That being said if its a good story that totally sucks me in I don't care about genre, it's all about immersion for me. Harry potter, Artemis Fowl and LOTR books I find pretty good for this.

The book I'm reading at the moment is "The Audacity Of Hope" by Barack Obama, I figured this was something is SHOULD read but it is actually pretty good and I find myself agreeing with a )lot of his ideas (haven't finished it yet though"
