A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. 4 of them out so far, and they are masterpieces.
Mainly A Storm of Swords which squeezes all of the Epic from the meaning of Epic. Theres not a single event in that book that isn't memorable.
Indeed, there is epic, and then theres the Red Wedding.
Jaime Lannister sends his regards.
Im rereading A Game of Thrones right now....i can't watch half the characters interact without feeling just slightly depressed. Especially you know who.
Well...You can always think about how cool Roose and Ramsy Bolton are...oh wait...
You, you....bastard! BTW bad things will happen to the Freys. ALSO EDDARD STARK IS NOT JOHNS FATHER (yes i am part of that cult)
It's Jon. xP

Anyhooo! You know what? Eddard being Jon's real father would be the plot twist. Kinda like a kick in the teeth to all "Who is Jon parents" theories. Martin would laugh...a lot.

The Alchemist and Sabbath are good, memorable books.
Not much in the way of a grand novella, but still absolute wonders.
And short, too.

The Good News About Injustice has definitely changed the way I see things and my life in general. It's caused me to take a completely different path in life, and shown me how we really can (and must) fight evil and change the world. With any luck, I'll even get to work for International Justice Mission some day.

To a lesser extent, Kingdom Come also was an eye opener, but really it was confirming what I already suspected, and it suffered from the author's failure to escape from the false dichotomy between individualism and collectivism.

The Skeptical Environmentalist also deserves a nod, as it shows quite elegantly the problem with the lack of critical thinking that is all too common.
