So, me and friends decided to celebrate the holidays by going and playing something together. But we sort of hit a rock - we can't think of many games that can be played coop. All I have at the moment is Magicka, Left 4 Dead and Delta Force (first thing that comes to mind when I think coop. Also, probably the last thing I'll play), Torchlight 2, and possibly Minecraft.

So help me out - we need games with 4+ players coop and also preferable LAN option but not essential. Also, the games should be fun to play.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Forgot to mention - PC only, if you're wondering.

Dungeon Defenders is good with friends. It's cheap and it gets updated all the time. It's focused on tower defense, but you can also hack and slash your way through enemies if you wish.

There's also Mann vs Machine in TF2. It's a ton of fun, if you haven't given it a shot yet.

I've heard Sanctum can be a good time played co-op, and it's pretty cheap to boot so it's a low risk experiment.

Castle Crashers, yes it's on PC now, is a 2D simple slash 'em up game for up to 4 people that is a blast to play. The variety of worlds, characters and weapons is great.

Oh yeah, Payday is a good one. It really requires everyone to work together. A lone wolf is a dead wolf.

Dunno, none of us plays TF2. Not that we wouldn't try it, but it's not a priority. Still, ho interesting is it?

Yeah, I suggested that. Turns out one doesn't find it that appealing (TBH, I probably wouldn't want a total newbie to start it) and another has played the hell out of it, so isn't interested. A shame, I always wanted to play some multiplayer NWN.

This is something interesting, though. I think I've played SWAT 3 back in the day and/or some of the Tom Clancy games most probably Ghost Recon. They were fun, I'd like something like this. Tactical shooter sounds like it'd be right down our alley. Any more tactical shooters? Aside from Tom Clancy games, that is.

AHA! I was trying to think of that name. I remembered the game but couldn't recall how it was called. Thanks for that.

Diablo II
Diablo and clones are out. Aside from TL2. Yeah, it's the rules or something. I don't really mind, though, I burned out on D2 quite a while ago, I'm not sure I want to go back yet.

Unreal 2k4 and Quake III.
Do these have any coop aside from CTF or team deathmatch? I mean, I know Q3 doesn't, that's for sure, but what about Unreal, is there a PvE mode of some description? Could be in a mod. When I think about it, Q3 could have some mod as well.

Borderlands sounds quite appealing. How's Payday, though? I know, pretty much nothing about it. I didn't know it was an FPS, that's how much I didn't know. Well, I could have worked it out but whatever. What do you do in it and what are the strong points?

Now whilst the game is reasonably shite, and it does have it's issues, so long as you're not taking it seriously Dead Island is actually fun with decent company. I'd pick it up cheap though.

Think Left 4 Dead, except you're robbing banks. There's even a free L4D map!

Other than what's already been said...
Doesn't Far Cry 3 have co-op maps? They sound alright.

There's also that "Party of Sin" platformer thing on Steam. From what I hear it's pretty bad though.

I haven't played much Quake, so I'd say the only PvE in the original game would be against bots. Which, on the hardest difficulty, can still pose a challenge for even the best FPSer. Same goes for Unreal. Godlike bots are fucking scary.
I don't consider bots PvE, really. It's just a frag match again. Only the opponents may be haxig. And yeah, it's actually fun
> put bots on Nightmare!
> fill the server with Xaeros
> everybody choose Xaero as skin
> Everybody use Xaero as a nick
epic battle xD. For added fun, try and not kill bots, but focus on other players only. You'll be basically trying to pick out the worst performing Xaero and try to frag him before one of the other Xaeros. Still now what I'd call PvE but entertaining nonetheless.

See, I don't know how valuable my opinion is on this. As far as horde mode type things go, Mann vs Machine is my only experience with it (well...does Mass Effect 3's multiplayer count? I did play a little bit of that). I find it very fun with friends. Though keep in mind that most of my friends on Steam are people with 1000+ hours in TF2 and are really good at the game. So we usually wreck shit.

But you have three to six people on your team, and you face waves of enemies in increasing difficulty (for the most part). You buy upgrades with cash that you pick up from fallen enemies (so collecting money is a huge priority). Upgrading my weapons is the part that makes it most fun for me. Having a rocket launcher that can shoot eleven rockets in two seconds...pretty awesome.

But TF2 is free and regular Mann vs Machine is free. There is a Mann Up mode (that's where I've spent most of my time in MvM) that requires you to have a 99 cent ticket as well, but regular MvM is fun too.

Also...how have you never played TF2?

If you've all got copies of Half-Life (and, perhaps Blue Shift and Opposing Force(but no required)) there's always the classic Sven Coop.

It's still being updated. Has been since 2000, I believe. And has a fairly healthy, active community that continues to create new maps, campaigns, and other content.

For a Source Gold mod, it's quite expansive and robust:

Mod - http://www.svencoop.com/
Extra maps/content - http://scmapdb.com/

There's a lot of varied modes and map types to choose from. Everything from playing the original Half-Life campaigns cooperatively, to horde/defense, to custom quests, to fantasy dungeon crawls, to recreations of other games (Resident Evil, Tetris, Mega Man, etc).

I can almost promise you'll find something you and your friends will enjoy.

[edit]
Oh, also....it's all free. Provided you have Half-Life 1, of course. If you don't, five bucks a pop will solve that issue.

[edit 2]
Forgot to mention, the mod team has basically rebuilt the Src Gold engine numerous times. They've pushed the old engine to, and beyond, it's original limits. So, expect to see things not normally possible in the old Half-Life games.
