I should probably explain what I mean by body types a bit more. I can't help but find that there's a lot of female characters that tend to be built like supermodels out there, regardless of how much sense it makes, so I thought it'd be nice to appreciate the ones that break out of the mold. Female characters that are more muscular, fatter, bigger, shorter, smaller, thinner, anything that doesn't fall within sterotypical super model range. I think a good example of this is a character that has been introduced into the TF2 comics. Heavy's sister Zhanna

Here you can see Spy, Zhanna, and another spy

She's much bigger than the average woman, to the point where she's freaking huge and some people are even scared of her (Well she's related to HEAVY. It's kinda expected) She's still attractive, but as people on this website will point out over and over again, individual choices aren't bad. Really there's nothing wrong with an attractive female character. Just the fact that there aren't many alternatives. Besides, Zhanna is a lot of fun. Her introduction was her wanting nothing more than to have sex with a man, yet at the same time she managed to make it about her and an interesting part of her character and the environment she grew up in. Her relationship with Soldier (He has a sex drive. I honestly had no idea) is actually pretty adorable. I had no idea you could make getting a necklace of severed ears as a gift and make it look cute, TF2 proved me wrong. Kinda cheating here, but TF2 is a video game first and the comics do take place in the same universe.

Speaking of which, a good example of an ugly female character is Christine from the Fallout NV: expansion Dead Money.

I said let's put a SMILE on that face! You got it upside down!

She got those scars from being locked in an automated surgery machine, which (Very understandably) made her rather claustrophobic and this actually plays into your interactions with her. She has a very interesting arc hunting down a former leader of hers and how it ties into her duty. She's also unique in that she's one of the few lesbian characters in gaming, and the only mute character that I can think of.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying having an attractive female character that looks like a supermodel is bad. Far from it, I love plenty of characters like that. But when you design your character's appearance, you not just giving them a shell, what they look like is part of who they are. And seeing so many female characters with the same level of attractiveness and body type can get a little "Been there done that" before. Variety is the spice of life.

So let's get a list of the variety out there going.

I have to say that I've never heard of Wren. Who is she? What game is she from?

She and her twin brother are the protagonists to the Costume Quest games.

Dragon Age had a couple, in Aveline and Wynne. You could definitely make an argument that either was attractive, but they were atypical...Aveline for her dowdiness, Wynne for her age (although I seem to recall she used the same 20 year old body as the rest of the female characters...Wynne has Helen Mirrenitis).

KOTOR 2 had Kreia. Kreia would probably stand out as an excellent example of what the OP is looking for.

You've also got the AIs in Portal and System Shock but they probably shouldn't count.

Yeah, I believe Wynne did use the same body but, although I'm not sure, I think BioWare made a joke about that with the "I've known women half your age who've not held up half as well" dialogue between Wynne and Zevran.

Yeah, I haven't even played DA2 and I think Aveline is pretty cool. I remember my female friend saying that she wished that there were more characters like her in gaming. I think she was referring to body type though, though she was a fan of her personality.

It's a tricky one as games fall back on the "beautiful is good (and vice-versa)" trope just as much as films and comics do. But let me see what I can dredge up...

I suppose technically she's "Hollywood Ugly" (read: perfectly fine looking, just not over-glamourised).

One of the few kick-ass older women in gaming.

A bit, well, mannish at the best of times. And this is her "pretty" form.

She's pretty, but her ultra-athletic body-type certainly isn't mainstream. Her Street Fighter Alpha / SF3 appearance was particularly stocky.

What can I say, it's Lucy. She's not a babe, she just gibs people while wearing questionably tight clothing. Also "interesting" is the "Angel" variant of the skin, who in the in-game lore is a plus-sized sex bot who went mad and killed her creator. Death by snu-snu!

Another older lady... and certainly a unique body type since her arm was amputated.

She's a baby who wears a frog suit.

An indisputably rockin' body, but she's not pretty.

Well, in Xcom, you can have some of your female soldiers be mini mechas.

The Wlaking Dead Games also have old women in them.

Sonic Generations also have animal form females.

Theres also Wren from Costume Quest. ( Though truth be honest, I'm taking a hiatus form gaming so I can focus on my college classes)

Though tbh, attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be disgusted by what other people found sexy.

Pretty much all the female characters in skullgirls.

They're all deformed in some way, except for Parasoul and Filia (I guess).

She made big chins damn sexy though.

OT: Caroline Becker from Wolfenstein: The New Order. And while I do have an indescribable crush on her, she's like a 50-year old paraplegic. Though she also suffers somewhat from Helen Mirrenitis, but only in the facial area. [sub]Hence the crush I suppose.[/sub]

Starcraft's Kerrigan comes to mind, even if she's one of few female voices in the sausage fest of the Koprulu sector. And the female characters of Diablo 3 certainly come to mind. Blizzard seems to be ahead of the curb when it comes to most of their female designs, with only a few hiccups that come to mind.

I think the biggest push is for at least sensible character design. I tend to agree with the notion that some characters should be sexualized because that's the point of the character. But as that's the status quo regardless of whether or not the character should be, it's probably best to not try for that until the standard has shifted.

Hell, you don't even have to go full "Women on BBC" (aka realistic women being cast as opposed to the CW's "they should all look like college freshmen"). For instance, over at the Cracked forums, they did a redesign of Resident Evil's Jessica to something more acceptable to people.

Started with her.

"As a strong independent woman, she doesn't need her shoulder connected to the rest of her body"

"I tried to save this woman, but alas it was beyond my abilities. Rest in peace, duck face agent."

"At least now she has a full pair of pants and an arm."

"Alright, after spending an hour resurrecting this character with the help of Bakudai. Removing her makeup and putting a mask on her made the design look much less like a glamour model's head chopped ontop of another woman's body and more as someone who could actually beat the crap out of you. Though in a very porny way. I tried to fix the pose by simply straightening her torso but my tablet is breaking so I couldn't fix the holes left behind.

For some reason her hips are a ball joint. If my tablet was working I'd either mirror her hips or straighten her torso."

I mean... you could go back to the old Sierra adventures. Laura Bow was probably intended to be attractive, but it is hard to show that with those old art styles. Absolutely incredible character, and terrific games. Probably the first time I played a game where the player character was a woman.

there Helga from Loadout, whos actually flat-out fat.

Unfortunately some gamers act in decidedly childish manners and act like seeing a fat woman in a game is hugely offensive to them.

I don't know, I think most of the given examples are very attractive to me because everyone is beautiful, no matter what others tell you. :")
Sappiness aside, listing like this is fine, but I personally would prefer to have more unconventional beauties as playable lead, not just being NPCs.
