Dear Escapists,

I'll be running a heavily homebrewed D&D 3.5 campaign come summer and beyond. To keep it all organised, I started up a wiki (so that, y'know, everyone could make any alterations they thought desirable) but I've come to realise that using a forum/message board for these purposes would actually be a lot cleverer due to the increased privacy, more easily accessible discussion feature etc.

Long(ish) story short, however, I have no idea which of the oh-so-many forum providers I should go with. Wikispaces was a simple choice for the wiki as it came highly recommended and seemed to have a lot more features, but I have no idea how to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to forum hosts. Which is why I'm looking for some input on which one I should go with? Which have you used before? Which would you recommend (against?)

Thanks for any input!

TLDR: Need forum host. Which I pick?

(Also, woot, first topic I've ever made on the Escapist!)

I actually run a forum for exactly the same reason (Even 3.5 too o_O). I've been using InvisionFree [http://www.invisionfree.com/] since May 2008 and it has worked fantastically. Just a couple of months ago I upgraded to their newer forum type, Zetaboards [http://www.zetaboards.com/], which adds a lot of new features. It's been really easy and straightforward to use, and once all of my friends were registered I was able to turn off new registrations and set the board to only be viewable by people that are logged in. I've never had any problems with spam of any kind, or anyone accidentally finding the forum and posting.

Hope that helps :)

Edit: Also thought I should mention, as far as I'm aware it has never gone offline. It also does have ads (one banner at the top and bottom of each page) but if you really care I think it's something like $5 to have them permanently removed.
