Well if by any chance you have an iPod Touch or any iOS console, there are always lots of great games going on sale for free (there's a youtube channel called TheGameTrail that often posts videos about the best free games of the day)

If you just want online games...hmm...I like Echo Bazaar and Kingdom of Loathing, but those are both faulted for limiting the amount you can actually play per day.

Hmm...sorry, I'm having trouble thinking of specific examples right now.

Multiplayer FPS: Tribes Ascend, Team Fortress 2.

RPG: Spirit Engine 2.

Roguelike: Brogue and TOME 4 are good free starting points (and TOME 4 can be played non-permadeath as a standard RPG,) and there are a lot of other good ones out there.

And +1 to Kingdom of Loathing. It's sort of a browser-based parody of an MMO with stick figures.

Solitaire is free, provided you have a deck of cards on hand. As for computer games, adultswim.com has got quite a few fairly simple flash games that you might like.

Dwarf Fortress is one of the best strategy games ever made and it's still in the beta stages. Completely free as well, although I do recommend donating when you get the chance since the games developer works full time on this game and is kept going through donations alone.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is also free and really damned good to boot. Not the best Mechwarrior game some would argue, but it's still an extremely good game even just in its own rights. Plus free, it's hard to argue with that sort of price.

Tribes: Ascend meanwhile is a new game with a free 2 play model. Extremely fun as well, I've been playing it for a long time throughout the various beta stages and I love the game. Haven't spent a penny on it either, although I think I might next paycheck, yet despite having spent no money I still feel extremely competitive. Free 2 Play done right!

i know how you fell, i'm in college too. you could check on Steam, 1) they have a good numbers of play for free games like Team Fortress 2 and so on 2) many times they have great deals on games (like for me, i got portal 1 and 2 for 15 dollars). also there is the lastest Tribes game. DOTA 2 is going to be free to play, but with a twist. There also Battlefield play for free.

I've been playing Fallen Earth lately, free MMOFPS/RPG on Steam. For reasons I can't really explain, I've found myself becoming rather addicted to it. I'm a sucker for the post-apocalyptic setting, I suppose.

Pretty unpolished and a little vague on its finer mechanics, but I still dig it.

Ghaaargh! Yuck, stay away from BF Play4Free, it is horrible, just not worth looking at. Very much a Pay to survive model, you are better of with TF2, Enemy Territory or even Warsow.

There are some OK MMO's that are Play For Free if that is your thing, Lord Of the Rings Online and Star Trek Online are perfectly playable without purchasing anything, and they are solo-able to boot.

Free games? If you have a computer then I know of a few.

League of legends: If you can ignore the community or find friends to play with then this is a very fun game.

Realm of the mad God: A browser based Co-op fantasy MMO kinda game, it's a lot of fun and completely free.

Battle for Wesnoth: A turn based strategy game that can be pretty fun, it also has lots of additions to it via mods that you can download and install easily in-game.

League of Legends is the one I've played the most, apart from Team Fortress 2 but I haven't really played that as much since it went free (got bored of it just before).

I'm going to show you this guy.

He does reviews of Free to Play MMOs and has a pretty good review system going for him. Also you can watch the first episode but that MMO closed down so just a notice.

Have you considered just BUYING a BIG BAG of old SNES games?

Morally questionable, maybe; but needs must when the Devil drives.

Why is it that I can never get to recommend Battle For Westnoth before someone else gets to? However this is a great game which is not resource heavy so almost any computer can play it.

If your PC and your patience can handle it, ARMA 2.

Stay away from "free" FPS because they are totally Pay2Win and most times riddled with laggy servers.

Ace of Spades - Voxel trench warfare
World of Tanks - Complex tank combat MMO
Quake Live - Frag noobs in your browser
Trackmania Nations - Compete in time trials on ridiculous tracks
Exile/Avernum - Awesome oldschool shareware RPGs now released as freeware
Abuse - Sidescrolling shooter made open source
Soldat - Sidescrolling multiplayer shooter w/jet boots and ragdoll physics
Dungeon Crawl - My favorite roguelike
Nethack - My second favorite roguelike
MUDs - You are likely to be eaten by a Grue

Geez, I got a warning for making a joke about piracy, you might want to edit that out since it's "advocating piracy".
Oh snap, for real? Thanks for the heads up. Hooray for freedom of speech, huh?
