So, soon enough I'm going to have a bit of money in my paypal (to pay the friend who made my new avatar for me, and one other avatar not featured on Escapist), but I'm going to have $3 more than predicted.

She suggested that I use the money to buy a cheap game on Steam, and I figured that wasn't a bad idea. I have no idea what game I would get, though, especially since Steam's "$5 or less" category is flooded with DLC and extras for more expensive games.

I decided, why not ask recommendations from the Escapists? So that's what I'm doing. What games for $3 or less could you guys recommend? And it HAS to be $3 or less, I absolutely won't have more to spend (unless it's at most $0.30 over that limit). I'm also not interested in platformers or RPGs unless they're fairly light in the RPG elements.

My Steam username is saluraropicrusa (just like my username here!), in case you want to check what games I own/have played--though it's worth noting that I haven't enjoyed every single game in that library. So, ladies and gents (and others), what would you recommend?

EDIT: Good suggestions, everyone, certainly ones I'll keep in mind. I just wanted to add a couple of things to the OP for anyone just finding the thread.

Sales with time limits are no good for me, since I might be waiting up to a week for the money to get to my PayPal account. Also keep in mind currency conversion, since I'm Canadian.

The Thief games are on sale right now for $2.50 each. I personally prefer the second one (Metal Age), but the original is generally considered the best, great games if you enjoy stealth.

Well, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is 3 bucks right now, on Amazon though.

Unfortunately, I'm not much a fan of stealth. As well, I won't have the money for 6-8 business days (thanks PayPal), so it's likely the sale will be over by then.

Not such a fan of horror either, though I'm sure that's a good deal. I also remember not being able to use PayPal to buy items off Amazon (though I could be wrong about that).

Painkiller (several of the editions) are on sale on Gamer's Gate. I see the price in pounds (£2.25) but it should be around the 3$ mark. It's a shooter and very enjoyable one...from what I'm lead to believe. Never played it but it should beanout killing hordes of stuff.

Green Man Gaming has a ton of offers and they even have a code that would give you another 20% off on PC games: GMG20-P4DLK-FKYRS here are suggestions from GMG

- Commandos 3, if you like strategies. You are given a small team of soldiers and a set of objectives, each soldier has different skills and strengths.
- Disciples 2 Gold - if you like turn based strategies like Heroes 3 (or Heroes 5) this one is both similar-ish and distinguished enough.
- Dark Sector - it's £0.93 if you use the code, come on! Also it's not a bad game either. You play as some Russian soldier who gets infected with...something and given the main gimmick of the game - throwable glaive. You also have other weapons but the glaive gets different upgrades and such. It's a shooter with a gimmick, basically.

Try the Binding of Isaac. It was that price when I bought it, although it was on sale and so could be more now.

Right now Shadow Warrior Complete is available on GOG for less than 3 dollars. The Build Engine's finest outing.

Ahh Lo Wang you oh so humorous racial stereotype where would we be without you? Probably swamped by a bunch of colourless dull shooters...oh no...come back, we want Wang!

Remember fortune cookie says: No man is an island, except Lo Wang!

I second this ive put around 180 hours into binding of isaac, plus the DLC for it is around 1 pound if you really want to splash out.

GOG probably has a few more options for you and ones that you can run on any machine without the steam client in the background. The downside is that they might require another $.99. If you want to get in on some retro fun, the first four Duke Nukem games appear to be on sale for $2.39 each (and DN I&II are bundled together in one package).

Don't forget to let us know what you decided to buy.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I'll keep them all in mind, and definitely check out the sites suggested.
I suppose I should've mentioned I'm in Canada in the first post, so there's a small little issue of currency conversion if the game's not sold in CAD.

Anyway, I'll definitely let you know what I decide to buy. :)

Indie Gala Store always has some nice little bundles. Right now you can get Painkiller: Reccurring Evil redeemable on Steam for $2.99 or there are a few other bundles with a minimum price of $0.99.
