Well for the 360, I think you can't go wrong with either Overlord and Fable (1 and 2, 1 for the PC as well). Both aren't too serious, fun is the main objective, they're both colorfull but not overly childish. Light hearted fun, wich I think is important for someone who's new to gaming. Also very important, both games I mentioned (I think) won't feel her pushed in some girl-gamer stereotype.
For the PC, World of Goo is indeed a must (great suggestion, hopeneverdies) and obviously Portal for a more serious game. Maybe Team Fortress 2 would be a nice suggestion, also colorfull, humorous and not too serious. For the same reasons you could always try an MMO, especially WoW or free MMO's like ROSE Online (I loved that game for almost 3 years in total). Both aren't too serious, light hearted, easy to pick up.

However, I'd like to know more about your girlfriend. Afterall, I'm doing some suggestions alright, but I don't know who she is. Maybe she likes action movies, for example, then I'd recommend Bioshock and Half Life 2 in a heartbeat. If she loved The Fast and the Furious, get her Need for Speed Undercover (also great for splitscreening) for the 360, or Burnout. Some more details about her personality would really help this thread ;-) Afterall, if she's some kind of hippy I don't think she would enjoy Overlord, or Half Life 2 :p

For PC, get Portal for her, that's a must. Otherwise, I suppose she could try some indie games like Auditorium (a must) or World of Goo, like hopeneverdies said (above). PC platformers aren't usually that good (although Scarygirl, on this week's Alt+Escape, isn't too bad). Otherwise, I suppose try and introduce her to some of the games you play yourself, and see how she finds them. Hope this helps :D
Portal it depends on how creative a person is when it comes to problem solving and their spatial reasoning. And I believe you mean Audiosurf, which is my favorite music game, mostly because it doesn't punish you for sucking too bad, which is good for OP's gf

But put it on the hardest difficulty otherwise it's just too easy!

...Seriously though, I'd say CoD4, because it starts out easy and has a pretty steady difficulty curve.

Or Portal... Portal is a must and it's pretty easy.

I agree. Ninja Gaiden is soooooooo easy.

Heh heh. >_>
I feel bad for a person whose first game is Ninja Gaiden.
They'd probably never play a game again.
Honestly....it wasn't that bad.
But then again I'm one of those kids that likes playing the impossible mario levels (and beating them).
I would say Burnout, Castle Crashers, hell even Halo since you have a 360. For PC, try any RTS

Id say a sandbox game could be good because of the whole do whatever the hell you want factor. GTA4 and Saints row 2 are both gr8 but i would say saints row 2 because of the whole it dosent seem to take itself seriously like GTA4. And it is quite easy

Nope, not Audiosurf, but Auditorium. Here's the link to the demo, you get the first act there (you can buy it on the site for about $10.99 which is about £7, I think, and you get about 15 different acts in the full version)

You have a 360; I'ma say Bioshock and Assassin's Creed

Not just because they're both games that I love, but I'm a girl and I find I like exploring around and Bioshock is surprisingly open in a lot of areas. Both games reward diligent exploration and also aren't that difficult to play once you get the controls down.

Mind you I'm a 100% type person, so I don't know if my exploration is for fun or compulsive at this point. Well, if your girlfriend is anything like me (and she's probably not, if she is, then there's hope for people like me but I doubt it) she'll take to just about anything, try co-opping in some FPSs as well.

Thanks guys, it seems like a general agreement is Portal.

I'll also pick up World of Goo, seeing as i haven't played that myself, haha.

I was also thinking about getting her Diablo 2 to play with me sometimes.

Erm, no, he likely means the game Auditorium.

:)

EDIT to bring this onto the topic:
Generally speaking, girl gamers are exactly the same as guy gamers. I've seen most CSS girl gamers with the same... bad habits... as guy gamers. Anyone with experience in FPS games multiplayer should know what I'm on about.
Bring her into what games you enjoy, or something that suits her interests. Learning curves can be pretty much ignored if you've got a nice library of games going on. She finds something too hard for the now? Move on to a different game. Just keep it interesting for her, and within what she'll enjoy, which is something none of us can tell you.

which is a pretty good choice: it's fairly low-impact game. But if she's already playing Diner Dash, then I would guess she's already into browser-based games. If the goal is to actually drag her more into the realm of 'teh hardcorz!', it might not make sense to move to another browser-based game or casual game (like Peggle). Those are what I'd recommend when starting a person in video gaming from scratch.

What? RTS games are like the hardest games to get into for people who are new to games. Well, its easy to get into, but its confusing to be "Good" or use the more complicated stuff. Stuff like hotkeys, and formation stuff. Or strategy (This armor type fight this attack type and such)

Provided there is some sort of trainer mode, RTSs might very well be an excellent choice. While you're right that they can be confusing, I discovered that chicks really dig being God. In fact, so much so, the OP should absolutely positively NOT choose the Sims to get her more into gaming. If he does, you can just kiss that relationship goodbye.

EDIT: to reiterate, I still think having a training mode should be the most important factor. Every gamer hates frustration, and girls are no different. Also, the 'teacher-student' dynamic can be stressful, so I would definitely avoid situations where you have to be the person showing them what to do/how to play, if you can.

I will agree with portal. While it has the challenges and stuff to complete and the advanced levels for the hardened player, ti is a relatively simple game that introduces the player to FPS and puzzle simultaneously. In other words, it is genius. And fun. Also, like i said challenges and advanced for if she gets really interested and gamey

What an interesting game, probably won't get the full version, my parents are cheap >_<.

What sort of movies does she like? that can be a good starting point (not talking about horrible tie in games but for maybe pinpointing a particular genre)
