Combat arms for the pc to get her use to an online community. It's free and fun (some times).
Fallout three and the fallout line is a good way to get her use to RPG. Need for speed racing gmaes.

Half-Life. Or any FPS or 3rd person game with a trainer really.

Guys don't seem to realize, most girls aren't really that different from us, particularly in the sense that they don't want to look dumb playing a game. If a person ever likes action movies, they probably would enjoy a FPS; the question is, will they become too frustrated by learning the controls and how to play?

True story: My at the time girlfriend (now wife) got irritated at me for staying up too late playing Half-Life and Unreal. But I noticed that she would watch me while I was playing, clearly interested. So I showed her the trainer in HL, and had her set the game to 'Easy' and left her alone. {That's a big deal, really. Put her on the computer and then leave the room. Otherwise it is quite likely that they'll get 'performance anxiety')

Now, she is a kick-ass gamer. As I type this, she's in Ulduar with her guild in WoW, getting server-first bosskills. Not even fucking joking about that.

Speaking of which... If you think a MMORPGuh is more her speed, I can only provide this advice: Level with her, don't powerlevel her. Let HER control the pace you move at, and what you do. Nothing says "hamster on a wheel" more than being dragged around by somebody else. Yes, you can make suggestions based upon your experience, but remember that the sense of wonder that will really get her engaged and invested in the game will only result from the sense of personal discovery. If you try to do the 'guided tour' of Azeroth (or whichever one you choose), you're going to leech that out of the experience.
That one speaks the truth

Get BioShock on the PS3 and let her play on Survivor mode. That will condition her to a pro gamer in hours

I just Typed out a really long 6-part strategy, when I realised - just give her a game depending what Movies she likes, if she likes action, 1st and 3rd person shooters (Army of two/halo/CoD, Anyone?), if she likes horror, give her a Survival horror, (EG: RE5, Bioshock, Deadspace...) If she likes fecking...kiddy movies...give her (Pains me to say it, its actually a pretty fun game) mario Galaxy......
if she likes romance/drama/chick flicks, well, either you need a new girlfriend, or your gonna have to give her some GOW and tell her to release her stress, then tell her the button to chainsaw the shit out of things, it will either make her immediateley fall in love with you or make her stare at you blankly for ten minutes, risky, but Sometimes effective.

Something fun and addictive. If she likes Star Wars (Shh! It could happen!), KotOR 1 is amazing. Portal is a fun and entertaining option, but please - stay away from Mario and stuff like that unless you're really into it. If I was introduced to gaming with a Pokémon game or something like that I would totally flip out, and only read books for entertainment afterwards. Indie games might be a good choice though - if you play on a console Guitar Hero is nice if she enjoys music.

Don't do anything overwhelming like Oblivion. Perhaps Fallout 3 because that is not quite as overwhelming and it can introduce multiple genres (to an extent) such as FPS, RPG, survival horror (well maybe not together, but at the start it can be challenging and certain parts can be slightly horrific), and even third person shooter depending on how she wants to play.

Perfect Dark is a good introduction to FPSs (that's how I got passable at them) and also Pokemon is another good way to get into games. But you'll need either a Game Boy (Red, Blue and/or Yellow), Game Boy Color (Gold, Silver and/or Crystal), Game Boy Advance (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and/or LeafGreen), or a DS (Diamond, Pearl and/or Platinum).

And Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band (preferably Rock Band) is a great way for your girlfriend to get into games as well.

EDIT: Mass Effect could be a possibility, but if she decides to play it, tell her to do it as a soldier class on easy.

Does she have any actual prefrences yet?

For RPGs, she should try Chrono Trigger or FF7. 8 is a little hard to start with...

FEAR or DOOM would make a decent shooter to start with, as would Farcry.

Warcraft 3 is a good RTS.

Oh, you could try Fallout 3, too, though it might feel a little advanced for her at first.

You should also get her to play God of War or Devil May Cry 4, those are good starters for the harder/faster types of games, imo.

I'd say Mirror's Edge, there aren't really any terribly complicated bits, the most number of moves you're going to string together is three. The combat is completely optional if you're not interested, and easy if you do decide to take part.

It's short, it's fun, and it's unique.

Nintendo has a lot of extremely easy to jump-in franchises with a solid amount of good gameplay for transitioning players, but you only have an Xbox and PS3, so you're a bit limited. (I suppose you can use an emulator, but still)

If you ever see her tapping out a beat to music or could ever see her doing so, perhaps Guitar Hero? Does she like horror films? Get her something like RE. Just think about what she likes, and find a game like it. It makes it easier to get into it.

I agree. Ninja Gaiden is soooooooo easy.

Heh heh. >_>
I feel bad for a person whose first game is Ninja Gaiden.
They'd probably never play a game again.
Whaaaat? Its like, the easiest game EVER. On opposite day.
I don't think I ever beat it...
That game is so tough it beat the snot out of me... and I haven't even touched the disk.
