How about the Prince of Persia games? They can require some manual dexterity, but they're quite fun and have decent stories.

If they don't understand that a game can have real story, show them Psychonauts. Or Machinarium, which may also be a good starting point.
Yahtzee said Psychonauts had some pretty tough moments in it. I am thinking an easier game that is easy to get into and won't frustrate someone who is totally new to games.
How about bioshock? It has a fantastic story, isn't too hard, and the vita-chambers bring you back with pretty much no penalty except for a little drop in how much EVE you currently have. After all, all the enemies are just as damaged as they were before, so even if you hit them once and died each time, you would still be making progress.

Two birds with one stone.

Arghh, you're almost forcing me to say Demon's Souls...
In any case: A MMORPG, you do not really need skills to play it, and you can ask people for help. Also, understanding that "+1 strength" makes you stronger isn't that hard.

No, not Bioshock, it's dark, you have to aim, and things are out to kill you in the most effective of ways. Yes, you can't die, but that doesn't mean they will even be able to kill a damn big daddy.

Any of the DS Pokemon games, I'd say. It's damn near impossible to find a tough Trainer that isn't:
A) A Team Galactic Admin;
B) A Gym Leader;
C) A Member of the Elite 4; or
D) In the Battle Frontier.

And even then some of 'em aren't that tough. I wiped the floor with Cynthia's Garchomp with a Floatzel that was almost 10 levels lower than the Garchomp (what was that about Garchomp being an "Uber"?).

Playing without any skills will get you killed later on, though. Not to mention that no skills means no group will want to have you because you'll end up doing something stupid like making all the eggs hatch and wipe the raid.

Ico is a very beautiful game and not too hard at all with gentle learning curve
KOTOR and Jade Empire aren't too hard either and both offer great storyline and gameplay mechanics.

They can. Just chip away at it, die, respawn, rinse and repeat. It's pretty much impossible to actually lose unless you turn off the vita chambers.

Hell, that's pretty much what i HAD to do on my first attempt at the game on my first Big Daddy encounter.

Besides, the game isn't that dark most of the time anyway, especially not with all the bloom lighting.

Racing games have got a number of my friend sinto games.

Burnout:paradise City is a good starter.

Also, Fable 2 is pretty user friendly.

A simple and not too hard game could be PixelJunk Eden. While it doesn't have any story whatsoever, it still is a beautifully designed game that doesn't demand that the player put in a lot of effort.

For different gaming experiences, what about Flower or Linger in Shadows? I haven't played them myself, but they definitely offer some alternative examples of what games can be.
Or perhaps LocoRoco. Small game titles might be better than throwing them into a relatively advanced title that will take many hours to complete.

I would rather introduce them to some immersive games like GTA or Assassins Creed. If they are too daft to learn how to run and kill then thay shouldn't be gamers in the first place. And if these games are too violent or intense (I cant see why though maturity is getting less common these days) then maybe a nice MMO or Fable.

I doubt someone who doesn't play games want their first game to just be dieing all the time...
Also, now that I think about it... I don't think I ever died in that game... Meh, my memory's probably just playing tricks on me. All in all, I don't think it's a difficult game, I just think that, for someone who never plays games... I think it might be a little too serious.

Yes, but later on you will have developed the skills needed to not go "LEEROOOOOOY JEEENKINS!!!".

Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

There are a few hard moments and while the story is great, it isn't what one would consider "Epic". It's an excellent game though.
Don't have it, sadly. =[ Otherwise it might be a good idea.

I am wondering if there might be any Wii games that might get the job done.
It's actually rather cheap should you ever choose to pick it up. My PS2 copy cost $15 while the Xbox version cost $5 (The Xbox version can't be played on the 360 though, I learned that the hard way. I miss my Defiance game -_-)

Oh oh! I know! What about Megaman Legends?

It's old, but it's super easy, it's fun, and it's got a nifty story.
