On a Shoestring:
League of Legends: slightly unforgiving community, but its fun and satisfying (and free)
X-com: is an old-school isometric Strategy game. Might not be for you, but its one of my favorite games, even though it was released before i was born. You can get it on steam for next to nothing.
Oblivion: Available for a low price bundled with all of its Expansions and i think some of its DLC. This needs no introduction: Get your RPG on in preparation for Skyrim!
Big Releases/non-budget games:
Shogun 2 Total war: Superb strategy game. Just buy it. Now.
The Witcher 2: Not for me personally, but I've heard alot of great things about it, so it must be doing something right.
World of Warcraft: Comes at a cost (£9 per month + your soul), but as a game, its brilliant. Entertaining quests that have come a long way from when the game was released and a wealth of endgame content. Has Balance issues but is still good! Also: I believe the first 20 levels are now free. Not sure if this is true. If you are willing to put the time in, you will make a lot of friends through raiding (i know i did and i don't care that they aren't "IRL" friends).
Civilisation 4: Inifinitely better than Civ 5 (in my most humble of opinions) with more depth. You could spend hours on this.
Finally: Good call with Audiosurf. Its a really amazing game.
Oh and i forgot Max Payne 2. It is Godlike. Slo-mo diving through the air firing guns has never been so fun and affordable
