Which really good horror manga would you recommend? I've read Tokyo Akazukin, but after a while, I realised that it was mostly style over substance and the plot got pretty shit.

Haven't read any real "horror" manga. But Berserk is pretty creepy in monster design and such. Mirai Nikki has some scary parts, too.

Uzumaki, or other works by Junji Ito.

His comics are body-horror, and take normal concepts, and make them creepy.

Parasyte is good horror. Imagine Alien meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers. A world where anybody could be a flesh-eating shape-shifting monster disguised as a normal person or animal, the main character forced to deal with one of those monsters having taken over his arm, the paranoia it creates as Shin'ichi struggles to maintain who he is and answer if he's still human. Plus that serial killer *shudders*.

I would say High School of the Dead but that one quickly shifted into self-parody and introspection of the zombie sub-genre.

Scary Book (I know I know) is pretty good. Mostly non supernatural but when it does go there it gets pretty spooky.

And as Lieju said, anything by Junji Ito is worth reading. Admittedly the ending of Uzumaki and several chapters throughout were a little more silly than frightening, but overall it's a pretty damn freaky story. The mosquito women and the mushroom babies... reverse caesarian... guh.

Depends on what kind of horror you're looking for.
You could take a look at Kago Shintaro's works, most of which are surreal to a varying degree and feature a noticeable amount of gore (he's got some pretty hilarious stuff, too).
There's Franken Fran, but that's less about horror and more about dark humor.
If you're looking for a good coherent story then Parasite is definitely a good choice. I wouldn't classify it as horror, though, at least not fore and foremost.

Can't quite recall anything else worthwhile off the top of my head at the moment.

Well, like some had pointed out, you can try some of Junji Itou's stuff. I suggest Uzumaki and Tomie.

Also, if you want Horror-comedy, try Franken Fran. It's personally my favorite manga.

you can also try Ibitsu. It's about a crazy lolita who terrorize a guy and his friends/family. It's a pretty quick read, but a fun one.

Also, Mahou Shoujo of the Dead. It's a zombie apocalypse anime, but instead of zombies, it's magical girls, and it's just as ridiculous as you think.

There's modern Tales of the Bizarre though it may be considered more Guro than horror, still pretty disturbing.By the same author there is Death Panda which plays out like the slasher movie time forgot.Though it is more goofy than scary.

The art on Tomie is a bit unpolished in the beginning, but it improves quickly.

10thing Junji Ito. Decent art, lots of body horror, and interesting storylines. Although I recommend skipping The Enigma of Amigara Fault, his most infamous work, which I personally found to be more silly and melodramatic than scary.

Also seconding Franken Fran, which, as smertnik says, is mostly black humor, but it's really freaking twisted black humor, so it's good for straight horror as well.

And if all else fails, troll for some guro while keeping in mind that people actually masturbate to what you're viewing.

Junji Ito is the only manga creator I tolerate. His art looks lifelike instead of the traditional anime look, the horror is pretty horrifying, and it's all so creative and completely new.

[HEADING=1]To everyone reading this thread who hasn't read Junji Ito before:[/HEADING]

READ THIS. http://brasscockroach.com/h4ll0w33n2007/manga/Amigara-Full/Amigara.html

It's one of Junji Ito's best works (in my opinion), and it's only around twenty pages long.

Alot of Tatsumi Yosihiro's compilations of short stories are quite horrific and unflinching, but he has a very no nonsense blunt and austere illustration style.

Palepoli (I think that's how its spelt) is another really graphic, horrific and experimental manga.

A lot of older manga is horror though, horror was often a vehicle for a dialogue on post war Japan so probably look into Sanpei Shitaro or Osamu Tezuka's darker works.

but you should really go check out American horror comic compilations from the sixties, Jennifer a short story by Bruce Jones and Bernie Wrightson is awesome(its better in black and white if you can find it)

Oo, have you read Long Dream? That one scared me almost as much as the mosquito women chapter of Uzumaki. And that one's hard to top.

No, haven't. I read Uzumaki and the (not so good) story about the girl who was murdered by her classmates and comes back to take revenge on all of them. Eventually I'll get to that one story about robotomized sharks.

Tomie, and the one you're wanting to read there is Gyo. Gyo is... rather disturbing. I mean moreso than usual even for Ito.

But I'd suggest giving Long Dream a read too. It's only 1 chapter long, I don't think it's even 30 pages.

A lot of Rumiko Takahashi's earlier works were hard-core horror. In particular the Mermaid Forest series and select episodes/stories from both Rumic World and Rumic Theater. Do note that Rumic World & Rumic Theater contain *all* kinds
of stories--supernatural horror/sci-fi comedy/slice of life comedy/mystery thriller etc....
It is entirely possible to be reading what you thought was a horror/mystery thriller only to find at the end that it was one of the "paradigm shift" stories that Ms. Takashashi is so famous for.

3X3 Eyes by Yuzo Takada is also decent horror/supernatural thriller, though I feel that it fails to explore some of the deeper aspects of the genre. Lotsa good demon/monster battles & gore though!

I would recommend Skyhigh. It is probably more mystery or supernatural than horror but give it a try.
