I was watching Zero Punctuation and I noticed over and over again how Yahtzee talks about concepts in games that "were original, but didn't work" and It got me thinking about all the GOOD ideas I have come across but all went HORRIBLY BAD.

Here's one, anyone ever heard of a game called Bochti (or something like that) it was a game on the GBA that had a solar detector sticking out of the cartridge. You could only charge your weapons up in the sun. It was a good concept, I mean, it was a game about killing vampires so it gave you the advantage if you attack them in the day while they are weakest.
It didn't work. The Solar Banks give you an ungoddly amount of interest, take a couple points of sunlight, put the game down for a week or two. And then you have enough sunlight to kill all the monsters in the game while playing in a closet.

Can anyone think of a few others?

Communism. Great idea, not that great on the execution.
Tell that to Josip Broz Tito.

I think an excellent example is Red Steel. Innovative shooter with swordplay and multiplayer? Sounds great. Broken controls with a terrible story and miserable local gameplay options? Less so.

You're thinking of Boktai (THE SUN IS IN YOUR HAND!), and it was a really cool idea, but didn't work all that well... if only because it kind of switched between stealth and combat at random intervals, as well.

Otherwise, I'd vote for Beautiful Katamari... a Katamari on the 360! How could that go wrong? Well, when a current gen game has a worse draw distance and frame rate than a PS2 title, I'd say it went REALLY fucking wrong.

Voice control in games. Good idea usually doesn't work.
It worked (relatively) well in EndWar.
Yep it did, that was the only reason I put usually there. I at least couldn't think of one other title that did even slightly well.

I loved the multiplayer. It was the best multiplayer for the Wii at that time.

The wii. Most games. Good example is Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, the fail was small but still relevant. Moving/flicking the wiimote caused your charcater to use his equiped tool or pick something up/throw it down. It meant if you were on really low stamina and you accidently moveyour wiimote then you are GOOOONNNNEEEEE!!!!. excellent game just poorly transferred from the gamecube. Another wii-fail is Super Smash Bro's Brawl. I love(d) this game buti don't think it incorporated the wii-ness well.

As a matter of fact, the touch recognition of the DS doesn't work that well. Brain age continually mistakes #s for other things.

The game was called Boktai -.- and the sun idea was genius. How the hell didn't it work?
I finished Boktai 1 and 2: Solar Boy Django, and I even bought lunar knights which got rid of the sun sensor and it just wasn't as good
Boktai still to this day remains to be one of the greatest games on GBA, Alongside Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Zelda: Minish Cap.

The only BAD idea about the solar sensor was it didn't work well if you were using a DS.
You need a Gameboy Advance to play that game, or an SP.
Also the Sun idea did work, because even if you were in the dark, you needed sun to Defeat the boss vampires -.- you couldn't kill them during nighttime.

Motion control. Maybe helpful with Wii Sports and a nice touch for some games (good for aiming, I'll admit), but it just mostly makes for finicky controls and games abusing it as a gimmick.

You know what, the Wii in general is great in theory, bad in practice. I was avidly looking forward to the virtual console before release, it had Twilight Princess at launch, and I didn't mind the reduced graphical capability. Turns out the virtual console, while letting me play games I missed out on like Ocarina of Time (I was four when it was released, I didn't know what video games were), wasn't too great and had crap pushed out for the most part (seriously, where's our Earthbound for those who were infants/want to revisit it?). Also, the lack of graphical power is quite possibly the Wii's greatest flaw because good games released on other platforms don't get released or are bastardized on the Wii.

I'd say the Wii in general falls under this category, I bought one and tryed desperately to have fun until I finally broke down and sold it to buy a 360, best decision of my life.

Oh you mean games wise, well the lense flare thing is actually really annoying. I know its one of those things so people can go "oh look how awesome this engine is" but its really kind of abnoxious.
Second that... if I want to be blinded by the sun, I'll go outside. Well I guess the game gives me the convenience of lens flare at night, but still :p

I would say the create song feature in Guitar Hero: World Tour. It would have been awesome to make your own songs, if it wasn't harder than a really hard thing.
