I'm getting settled into college, and all I have is my laptop. Now that I've finally installed Steam on it, I'm looking to get some new titles.

I tend to like the smaller more indie games, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what I should look into.

Just name the game you like and what makes it worth looking into.

I really appreciate it, thanks in advance

killing floor, best indie game ever, shooting and killing through witches and flesh pounds, and it has awesome music as well.

but if you're to much of a wimp for that theres always bit trip runner, pretty funky game about running, also contains awesome music.

Time Gentlemen Please! An old school adventure game with primitive visuals that is absolutely hilarious. Particularly of note is the lack of stock "I can't do that" phrases. Technically they're in there, but I don't come across them in the course of play, only when I'm trying to find all the custom responses to stupid or ridiculous things you can try.

Binding of Isaac. You've heard of this, it's an amazing little real time roguelike with an awesome sense of style. Shame it's all in Flash though.

Amnesia. This game terrifies me. Most games, even supposed horror games don't but this is just massively creepy and unnerving.

Bastion is a no-brainer and one of the most amazing games I ever played. One of the best appraised and popular indie games around.

Eufloria is a nice idyllic strategy game, but I found it to be infuriatingly difficult at some point.

Dear Esther holds a special place in my heart. Some people absolutely hate it, some love it. I personally, was astounded by its quality of writing, detail and beautiful metaphors it used - not only metaphors of words, but also the landscape tone and lightning.

Be warned though, it is a sad/depressing story. Still, I had tears of happiness welling up at the end.

I can second Killing Floor. Game's a delight to play.

Bastion and Super Meat Boy are great too.

Well if you want a rougelike game, meaning tons of replay value, where you take control of a crew and travel through space then I would heartily recommend the new game FTL aka Faster Than Light.

You can look at TotalBiscuit's WTF is... for more details, but since it's been recently released I would pick it up at the 10% off price just to save a buck and have tons of fun with the game.

The gist of the game consists of you controlling your crew and ship. The ship itself consists of the typical systems you would expect; shields, weapons, pilot, etc. Your crew get better at their job over time. Lots of other stuff I just don't feel like listing. Take a look and see if it interests you. I've already clocked 9 hours into the game and I don't feel like stopping anytime soon. :p

Bastion for some good action combat, a good story, narator and well a good everything
FTL: Faster Than Light for some tactical space battles. IT is really fun.

Well what kind of games do you like? There are a few great point 'n' click titles I'd love to recommend, for example, but it'd be pointless to do so if you dislike the genre.

I loved Bastion and Botanicula
Botanicula isn't hard but very light and cute so after playing Amnesia I was really happy to play it (liked music too)
Don't know if Pshychonauts is an indie game
Dear Esther isn't a game but a visual novel of sort, still I liked it anyway

-FTL: Faster than light, released a couple days ago and it's a fucking blast so far :3

-Terraria, I've played 175 hours on it, awesome game and some great coop ^^

-Magicka also springs to mind, FANTASTIC game and if you have some friends to play it with, it's even better.

Also try Dungeons of Dredmor. It is a great roguelike with lots of humor and content. It can also be modded and uses the Steam Workshop for that.

I'll third Killing Floor and second Magicka (but be warned that even after months of patches Magicka is pretty rough around the edges.)

As for games nobody else seems to have put forward:

Space Pirates and Zombies (and Bounty Hunters) is a nice little Space RPG

Metal Drift is kind of like Football in Tanks.

Audiosurf might be good if you have a large music collection.

My vote goes to Recettear and Fortune Summoners.

I've heard good things about To The Moon. I've never played it, myself, but I would like to.

Then we've got things like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac.

I also own Audiosurf, Amnesia: The Dark Decent, Killing Floor and Toki Tori. Maybe you should look into those, as well.

FTL, for the fourth/fifth time. GET IT.

Get it on gog.com, if you're willing, as they have a better DRM scheme than Steam (as in, none).

Also, get Amnesia, Bastion, The Binding of Isaac and Dungeons of Dredmor. That'll keep you busy for a good while.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Gratuitous Tank Battles is awesome and so is Gratuitous Space Battles.
Also, Inversion 2 just came out on steam and the demo for it is wicked awesome so give it a try.
