I want to get a JRPG that isn't full of grind or over-powered enemies and that has a good story. Can anybody recommend one? The platform in question is my computer.

Xenogears (it's a PS1 title - get a ROM). Serious grinding is unnecessary as the standard random encounters will keep you plenty well leveled. Best JRPG story ever. Still my personal choice for best game ever made.

Chrono Trigger but that's only using emulation for the PC...

I dunno, I only ever played JRPG's on consoles or handhelds ^.^

Well, in Final Fantasy 8 enemies scale to your level. So whether you are level 7 or 98, they will be, too. And you can usually avoid the worst enemies, like the T-Rexaur and Malboro. You can probably get that on an emulator or something. Honestly, that's about all I got without grind.

When you say isn't full of grind, do you mean "no grind" or "very little grind"? Because there can be a difference. Also, I generally would grind levels just because in JRPGs. The fun ones you don't really care about it.

Aye, gonna have to say if roms are allowed, the recent final fantasy threads reminded me of a bunch of great jrpgs, some of which might fit what your looking for.
But all of them would require messing around with console emulators and roms.

Agree on this, moar details about your tastes in grinding! FF8 for example has abilities that allow you to switch off random encounters completely. Between that and enemies scaling to your lvl that would make it the ultimate no grinding game.

Tales of Vesperia. If you can get past the cliche storm at the beginning, the characters and story progress quite well. And the combat is awesome and not turn based. It's like fighting game meets JRPG.

Edit: Oh, PC? Hmmm...

ROMs are pretty much you're only option I'm afraid... FF4 and 6 is pretty damn good.

There are sadly almost no jRPGs for the Windows platform. The Last Remnant and Recettear are both on Steam.

With high level emulation, there is Tales of Symphonia for both Dolphin and PCSX2(PlayStation 2 means looking for the Undub), and Tales of the Abyss. Which are games recent enough for you to almost feel like you're playing a recent computer game. You can also emulate Persona 3 and Persona 4 for the PCSX2 program. Mainly you will need a graphics card around the Radeon HD or nVidia equivalent level, and more importantly, a dual core or above, with 2.5 GHz or above.

If you don't have that much, PlayStation emulation is more your pace, and I recommend playing the Final Fantasy collection, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy Tactics of course. Then there is of course Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Tales of Destiny, and Wild Arms just to name a few. It's possible to play the PC version of VII and VIII, but they they are inferior to emulating them.

If you do not even have so much as Windows you can save money by doing much of this in Linux. Dolphin and PCSX both have easy to find Linux repositories. PCSX2 for Linux is also possible, though it requires you to compile yourself.

On PC? Yeah, Recettear is the only thing I can think of, too, barring emulation which I'm not all that cool with. I've only played the Recettear demo, and I liked it, but can't say much more than that. I guess there are JRPG-like games, lots of free indies out there, cheap ones too like Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World. I haven't played any of those either though...

Why don't you have a system for JRPG's like a DS or PSP?

If it's for the pc i would suggest last remnant. You can get it fairly cheap and it's game-play is unique, if you have your old ps2 then dust it off and get star ocean 3 or persona 3/4

I must add that FF8 is arguably easier with low level characters than high ones. You can boost stats to the maximum by junctioning magic to them even at a low level, and with most attacks being capped at the usual 9999, one's attacks will go farther.

That being said, if you are interested in hitting the level cap for whatever reason, a trick I discovered is to-
Once you get Odin from the centra ruins, go to the Island Closest to Heaven or Hell, and do something to move the dpad or stick to run constantly and hold down the triggers to initiate the "Run" action.
The idea is that Odin will come and kill everything for you, giving you nice experience. Otherwise, you just run away and find another battle.

The monsters on these islands are always level 100, so you'll want to check back every now and then, especially with the malboro there, starting off the fight with status attacks.

If you want to avoid grindy JRPGs you might want to look into action RPGs or maybe a hybrid like the Tales series.

With turn based JRPGs I tend to hate long battles (unless its a boss fight) I think its because I played shining in the darkness and the original Phantasy star games which had super fast battles with no flashy moves to slow it down.

Is there any later or modern JRPGs (that arnt dungeon crawlers) that have fast battles?

Super Mario RPG has alot of that JRPG charm (along with the Paper Mario series, not so much the third, but still good mind you) so i would highly recommend those.
