So almost a decade ago I bought an Ipod, and my life has forever changed. Long gone are the days of carrying a CD player around with me. No more scratched disks, or oversized pockets required.

That said, I need a new MP3 player. I have 65GB of music, and my Ipod can only hold 20GB. Everytime I try I feel like listening to a certain song, and I don't have it on the Ipod it makes me rage.

Well Black Friday is almost upon us, and I have decided I am getting an MP3 player of some type. A 80+GB size, the works, and is as cheap as possible are my goals.

I was originally just going to find an Ipod that fits, but then I realized that there are other companies that make these things, that don't have such high margins on their products.

So does anyone use an MP3 player that isn't an ipod? Is it any good?

Any thoughts on what I should buy or what brands/products I should look into?

As a general rule, Sony are good for reliable MP3 players.

Take a look at what they have, not too sure myself.

TBH, the biggest non-iPod MP3 player I've ever seen was like 32GB. As much as I hate to say it, your best bet would be an iPod. Eww.

What's your price range? And I think your best bet would be an iPod classic. Here's one with 160GB.

I would just get a smartphone, both the Apple and Android systems are making a cloud based music storage system which is going to be awesome (both are in beta now but I want to give it a try when I get a new phone)

I refuse to ever own an ipod again due to itunes. Itunes is just awful. Software interfaces getting in between me and my USB mass storage music file playing device is a big no no. I like to click and drag my music, movies, word document or whatever into my MP3 player and be done with it. I don't like large MP3 players so I cannot recommend anything over a few gigs. I believe Cumbersome and difficult to use middleman programs like itunes are the driving force behind large capacity MP3 players. The less times you have to suffer through the mess of adding and removing files the better. I prefer to add and remove music as a please onto a compact MP3 player without a cumbersome interface forcing me into a MP3 player the size a graphing calculator.

I recommend any music player that does not utilize itunes, zune or any other program. The ipod has fantastic hardware and build quality as it is an Apple product. All other MP3 players will feel cheap by comparison. I'll use a MP3 player made out of dog shit if it gets me out of Apple's walled garden.

You could always get an iPod classic and install rockbox onto it...if I'm not mistaken it will let you use it as a regular mass storage device then and let you sync with whatever program. Also has much better format support than the default iPod firmware.

I'm not sure of any other mp3 players of that capacity...people generally don't have that much music, unless you've got it all uncompressed or something. Perhaps you could create a playlist of songs you like rather than listening to everything ever recorded ever.

edit: Looking at eBay [http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/MP3-Players-/73839/i.html?_nkw=mp3%20player&_catref=1&_dmpt=AU_MP3_Players&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282&Storage%2520Capacity=160%2520GB%7C120%2520GB%7C80%2520GB], there doesn't appear to be anything of that size that isn't an iPod. You could always try buying a player with a hard drive and swapping in a larger one, though there's no knowing whether that would work. That or find something with removable storage that's compatible with 64gb sd cards (or use multiple cards), or perhaps that can mount and play from a flash drive of considerable size.

Your suggestion of a larger capacity ipod or hacked ipod is probably the best solution for the OP. When I get another mp3 player I will be looking into hacked ipods as they have the best of both worlds from what I hear.
