There's guild wars, which is single player wow.
There's lotro, which is wow with no attempt at setting originality whatsoever.
There's warhammer, which is wow with the focus shifted to pvp.
There's conan, which is wow with the focus shifted to nudity.
There's everquest, which is a very archaic version of wow.
There's eve, which you won't enjoy at all unless you have an established friends network already.
Finaly, there's darkfall, which is a community solely devouted to hating wow as much as humanly possible, most likely compensating for their own game, which is a dumbed down version of eve.

And before some idiot comes in blabbering on about how "superior" his/her game is compared to wow, all of the above is from my personal experience and i doubt that any of you know my about my personal experience then me.

calling everquest an archaic version of wow is a bit unfair. everquest came first. doesn't that make wow a mordern version of everquest?

I agree with giving Lotro a try, its a very good MMO. Ive been playing for a while and the community is very friendly and helpful, and middle-earth is very meticulously recreated and accurate, which is important to a Tolkien enthusiast like myself. Unlike WoW, leveling from 1-60 is actually fun and there is an actual storyline to enjoy. My subscription ran out a week or so ago, but this weekend is free for people whos accounts arent active any more so I am going to wait to reactivate. Id love to play with some fellow escapists, so roll a character on Elendilmir!

Guild Wars is great I think. It has an original, interesting story, well-written charactes, with just the right touch of charm and humor to make it really enjoyable. The quests and story also have good set lengths which I find keeps me from playing too much. There's holiday events with theme items too. There is grind, but there seems to be less than most other games. All in all, pretty enjoyable.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and it's the only commercially supported MMO without a subscription fee.

Anyhow, try EVE Online, it is amazing. It has depth like no other MMORPG, it features a huge game world (about 5,000 star systems) with player-driven content an extremly advanced player-driven market and a incrinate political system driven by the alliances that occupy the lawless parts of space, the fact that all players are on the same server contributes alot to these systems.

EVE provides a proper risk vs reward system, where you WILL loose your stuff if you are not careful, and you are not babysat by a bunch of NPCs or game mechanics. Life in EVE is harsh, things such as scamming, piracy and threats (in-game, not RL threats) to obtain money from other players.

And the greatest thing about EVE is that you have the possibility to become practically anthing you want, if you want to become a pirate that lives off holding others ransom, or make your monthly dough by stealing what others have left behind, you can, if you want to make your living selling exotic dancers, you can.

Also, there are no classes, everything is skill-based and you can buy any skills you wish. If I start out as one race, I can obtain the skills for other races ships if I want to. If I've played for 3 years as a mercenary pilot, I can still choose take up mining or trading any day I want.

All in all, EVE is full of oppurtunity, making it very uniqe in the MMO scene.

I have a good bit of experience playing MMOs. Here are some of my favorites and why.

WoW for overall in depth in PvE.
Warhammer Online for awesome PvP.
Tabula Rasa to be able to log in, pwn some aliens, then log out (plus the shooter aspect is cool).
City of Heroes/City of Villains for goofing around with your friends and for the great character customizations.

Hope this helped. ^_^

A few mates and I were planning on starting a mmorpg for the summer but we have all done WoW before.

We were thinking of playing age of reckoning but are there any other good ones you can think of for us to play?
Now there may be good MMO's out there, but if you want one like WoW, then WoW's the best you'll be getting. Now theres plenty of others out there that are free or stuff like Eve or Tabula Rasa (TR is alot like WoW but I recommend it til you get bored of it. Its really fun, but yeah, It does get kind of boring)

I am also going to throw in for LOTRO. The similarities to WoW end at the GUI and the fact that they share a similar combat system.

WoW is PvP focused. LOTRO is more focused on the story and individual experience within the world. Many people have commented on the graphics and environments of LOTRO, which are second to none. LOTRO has a very open and friendly community. We are known for being a united group (take a look at some of the MM stuff for proof of that, lol). The developers are very down to earth. I run a podcast for LOTRO called LOTROCast. You can find it at LOTROCast.blogspot.com. My personal experiences with the devs have been very positive. All the devs from the artists down to the live producers post on the forums in response to player questions. I should note that we also value maturity. If you want to give LOTRO a try, check out the website at LOTRO.com. Many people who come from WoW like to play the Rune Keeper class, as it is the closest thing we have to a mage.

I hope you give LOTRO a shot. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. My email is at the podcast website and my handle for the LOTRO forums is logal444

Lol, I didn't even see this topic until like 30 seconds ago. I was watching Stargate :p Great description of EVE btw. Although, I would like to add that there are randomly appearing and disappearing natural wormholes that bridge areas of space or connect known space with unknown, uncharted space filled with extremely intelligent and powerful NPC's called sleepers that drop fantastic loot that you can use to build customizable tech 3 ships. There, done. :)

WoW is PvP focused.LOL! I'm sorry... I couldn't help but laugh at that. WoW's PvP is meaningless (mostly, at least. The new PvP area in WoTLK has some pretty big rewards for the winners) and simple. I think WoW is very PVE oriented. WAR and EVE are PvP oriented, not WoW.

Wait of The Old Republic. The Old Republic will take over the world. I wish KoToR wasn't sacrificed for an MMO, but we have to deal with these things.

Tabula Rasa was closed down permanently on February 28th. You can't join it. It's not running anymore.

I'm not so sure. The second it was announced that it would follow an RMT model, I know a big chunk of the MMO consumers got turned off (including me, and I'm as big a Star Wars nut as the next guy).

City of Heroes.

Character creator is fun as all getout, teaming is a helluva lot easier to get into than most MMOs I've played, there's no strict adherence to the tank/DPS/healing triangle (enough support can make up for any role), and they've made the thing very casual-accessible over the years.

Assuming there is not more than 6 of you that want to group up in a new MMO, DDO (Dungeon & Dragons Online) is perfect. Nothing like questing when none of you know where the next trap, ambush or hidden door will be. Also a good test of how well you can work as a team.

Guild Wars is a good cheap option, and involves some nice grouping.

LotrO has some nice fellowship grouping.

City of Heroes is good to play grouped or solo and you can now link your friends so you don't get out of sync level wise.

I stongly suggest Warhammer Online!
The classes are fun to play, the PvP is simply genius and though it does have grind its not boring most of the time thanks to the Public Quests!

im goign to say play LOTR becase that game was the most satifyingto lay with friends, it had pretty graphixs a great feelign of induvidulism (so many weapons and armors to use) and best of all it had good cut sceens, i felt like even though lots of people had done this quest beforee me i was still makign a difference i nthe world (like the world changed as i progressed) and to top it all off rivindal jsut blew me away.

WAR will be a really good game in a year or 2 when most of the cool content that was commign out with release that got pushed back will have come out. though war was fun to play, it really is very PvP oriented, so if you andyour firends are into that play WAR.

dont play EVE. EVE is really cool at first but as yatzee said "why would i want ot pay money to have a second job" the graphixs are amazing but it gets so boring after awhile and it isnt untill you have alot of money and a good ship you can start expirencing the EPIC batles that the cinimatics promote
