APB should be out this year and if it's anything like Crackdown, should be quite good. As a note, it'll probably be more PvP centric.

I liked Lord of the Rings Online. Pretty nice community, a lot of great features, and it's been around awhile so there's been a lot of patching/improvements. I hear it's pretty similar to WoW (well, what MMO isn't?), but I found that simply exploring the game world is more fun than in most other MMOs. It's got good classes, cool items, decent crafting, and fun party-level attacks (fellowship combos). Check it out if you're into MMOs.

EDIT: I know community is important, and I wanted to highlight LOTRO's community. In the year or so that I played this game, I never put a single player on "ignore" because they were annoying (except for the random gold spammer). Ever. The players mostly seem concerned with having a good time and completing quests, not running around like assholes yelling about their "phat lewt."
I always thought the music system was the coolest part. 'Twas the only MMO I truly enjoyed, too bad I don't have time for it anymore.

Runescape! It's not got the best graphics in the world, but as far as gameplay and things to do other than combat are concerned, it's worlds better than WoW.

Dungeons and Dragons Online real time based combat. Endless ways to create your character, including Multiclassing, a great community. http://www.turbine.com/ is the main portal for DDO, LotRO, and Ashron's Call.

Played WOW on and off for 3 years the last 2 I played LOTRO also. In January dropped WOW and am playing just LOTRO . It's polish, overall mature community, free content updates, and a dedicated company behind it that responds to the consumer has all I need. I've also played DAOC, FFXI, Guild Wars, and a few other free to play MMOs and none have held my interest like LOTRO has....I enjoy playing and it doesn't become a grind like most of the games I've tried.

May I recommend Final Fantasy 11? The game is a subscription-based game and comes with 30 day Free Trial. It is an outdated game but the game is being consistently updated.
