The Great Gatsby.
Granted most movies don't hold up to the books they're based on, but this one did fine until about half way through.
I first saw it in school, after reading the book, and one scene ruined it for me. Gatsby (Robert Redford) and Daisy (Mia Farrow) are alone in his house and she is marveling at all of his opulent possessions, exemplifying his wealth. How is this shown? With copper molds! The kind you use for Jello or pate. The same kind that, when this movie was made, were in kitchens across America as kitschy wall art.
This one scene ended the movie for me. My teacher had to stop the movie at that point because I wouldn't stop riffing on it.
I know that this movie is considered to be a classic, and I know that the set designer or the prop department are to blame, but the fact that the movie made it to theaters this way just astounded me. Even cheap, painfully obvious costume jewelry would have been better.

For me, it would be Avatar.

Now I don't want to get a lot of hate mail, but even though I liked the special effects and good story, I kind of thought it was a bit contrived and pretentious. I mean, there is no doubt the movie was preachy and holier-than-thou, and it was also kind of forced in that the story was grossly unrealistic. It wasn't about plot-holes, actually the plot was good. But it was more the logical fallacy that spear wielding tribesmen could defeat a highly trained modernised force, even if that force was comprised of mercenaries and driven by corporate interests.

If history has taught us anything, it is that idustrialised armies ALWAYS win a war. As a historian, I just simply cannot get over this problem with the film. Plus, there is the obvious problem of when a bigger company, or a stronger mercenary force, or even a friggin nation-state and its army moves in to clean up.

Most "great films" that aren't nutty comedies. I can appreciate Shawshank and Citizen Kane and the Godfather movies, but I personally don't have the attention span or the desire to sit and passively consume someone else's vision like that. (gee, the guy who is famous for preferring sandbox games and builders doesn't care for movies---what are the odds?)

There's admittedly very few movies I wouldn't have the patients for, but one of those few would have to be Donnie Darko.

I don't know what it is about this damn movie, but I just fucking hate it. It's got good enough acting and plot, but I just fucking hate it so much. It just feels so fucking pretentious to me.

Mine is "No Country for Old Men" I watched it, saw how fantastic the pacing and scenery were... and yet at the end I just could not bring myself to enjoy it at all. The entire movie was a fantastic fruit pie, incredibly well made and presumably delicious... to someone who likes fruit pies, which I guess I don't.
I totally agree with you on this. I could tell it was a very good film, but I just didn't enjoy it at all.

For me, it's the Godfather movies. They are, undoubtedly, brilliant movies. But yeah, they don't gel with me.

lol I know exactly what you mean man, Blade Runner was just one of the least interesting films for me. I just can't see what everyone sees in it, since I couldn't connect with the characters or the plot at all.
Same with Clint Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy, I love themto bits, but they're just so dosconnected and slowly paced that it's excruciating at times. It's definitely something to do with the old style of making films.

Avatar. Like I've said in the forums here before, while I can admit, the visuals and directing is amazing, I can't bring myself to like it.

Too long, too boring, the acting sucked and the plot was stupid and unoriginal.

I'll admit it. The Godfather Trilogy is one of the best films I've ever seen but I'm just not into the Mafia to really enjoy it. Now my brother on the other hand just raves about them.

Upon rewatch I realised it was hardly the masterpiece it apparently was, and when compared to the book, it's absolute bollocks.
I know. That's exactly what I've been trying to tell all non-swedes I encounter on the internet who adores it. The film isn't even that good, especially not compared to the book.

The book is alright, though.

But, of course...just like the penguin craze.

OT: Casablanca was just too long for me, yet when I watch I enjoy it. Guess it's the same reason why I didn't like Watchmen.

I almost want to saw <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226611-2-50-Reviews-Zodiac-2007>Zodiac, because there was enough done right with it to make it not suck.

But, it was really boring, so I didn't like it.

slumdog millionaire, i liked the acting, pacing and cinematography
but i kept feeling removed from the film because of all the deus ex machina events that let him answer the questions, i mean com'on.
