While doing some browsing on TV Tropes (I think I'm addicted), I happened to come across nightmare fuel [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NightmareFuel]. This got me thinking: What things from movies, books, anime, etc. have caused some sleepless nights, chills running up your spine, and possibly some mental scaring?

For me, the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni anime (especially the sixth chapter) is practically made of nightmare fuel, but moment that freaked me out the most

When I was really little, I had a Batman book (one of those awesome books with the sound buttons on the side that you were supposed to push in certain parts of the book) in which the villains were Catwoman and Penguin. The Penguin scared me so badly that I had nightmares about giant birds that flew overhead and left these permanent huge scary shadows. Clearly, I was a traumatized youth.

I rarely ever get nightmares, however there have been 4 occasions where a certain thing has fueled my fear, in order of damage made: (I apologize to the mods and encourage others not to post lists of their own. I just couldn't find a better format.)

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Ah, yes. The old classic horror movie. I saw this and it made me afraid of the dark, afraid of watching television, afraid of sleeping. In short, it made me sleepless for several months and had lasting affects afterward.

X-Files. There was an episode about a monster that came through the sewer system. I didn't bathe or shower for several weeks. Now, I dislike baths.

Any Zombie Movie ever Made. I hate zombies.

That other movie about the reaper guy that kills people who have numbers above their heads. God, I had nightmare for weeks after that. Scary. Brr.

Cute topic. Well, my favorite type of games are horror, so nothing really sacres me...games or movies alike. The only example I can remember is that when I was 14, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem really scared me for awhile. No real nightmares, but I kinda got scared of being alone in a dark room for awhile. Damn that was a good game. Also I had a small stage that lasted about...two nights, where I kept looking suspiciously at my TV after watching The Ring.

That other movie about the reaper guy that kills people who have numbers above their heads. God, I had nightmare for weeks after that. Scary. Brr.
I think I remember that movie! It's with that guy who could see ghosts right? I think it was called...Creepers or something?; I watched it when I was like...twelve I think. It was a cute movie.

well I was about 8 and playing diablo and I entered Leoric's tomb and hearing that "the warmth of live has entered my tomb" and seeing him charge scared the crap out of me. Watching my friends play resident evil really gave me the creeps.

Any horror films which include children as the evil, E.G: The Ring, The Grudge, The Orphanage.

Children... No wonder I don't get along with my youngest brother *shudder*

I think one of the few things in a movie that has ever scared me enough to give me nightmares was actually a fish... I can't remember what it was called but it was a 3D imax movie I watched when I was a little kid, and one of the fish they showed had a mouth that opened into this enormous gaping maw of hooked teeth that gave me nightmares.

EDIT: Also, smiledog. Do not search for that if you want to be able to sleep at night. That gave me nightmares for a week, no exaggerations.

Any apocalyptic movie, book, etc. keeps me up at night because i can't help but point out every flaw in the theory that led to the downfall of society in the book, movie, etc.
This takes a while with some of the crappy books and novels being made today. Each movie in the resident evil series kept me awake for like a week because of how long it took to point out the scientific flaws that led to the creation of the Virus, how it works, how it was spread, the immunities, etc.

Giygas from Earthbound has to be one of the biggest example of Mindfuckery around, as was Silent Hill 2.

I'm scared of nothing, though.

I think I was 10 and my step-dad rented the movie Candyman.

Other than that I gave some of my friends nightmares. I was alseep in the room while they were watching Silent Hill. It got to the part where that demon was ripping off the girl's skin, and I started screaming while dead asleep. They told me about it the next morning.

The lawnmower scene from Dead Alive kept me up more than a few nights as a kid. Though looking back on it now doesn't phase me all so much.

Finding Nemo?

As for me, this [http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o208/True_RPJesus/?action=view&current=_________________.jpg] (the fact that I later saw it on uncyclopedia, and didn't realize that it was an animated version at first certainly didn't help).

The movie Beastman had these creatures that ate people whole and then "threw up" their bones. That was the only real thing that ever scared me as a kid. As I'm a huge horror film fan now it's pretty hard to get me even a little stirred up.

The only thing that has ever really given me actual nightmares was Aliens when I saw it for the first time about 10 years ago. Had horrible dreams about my head getting popped like a watermelon by a Xenomorph.
