You won't be able to get this game through normal channels so you'll have to get a ps1 emulator but I like Dragon Warrior 7. Its very basic but still fun beyond belief, spands three disks and requires a lot of grinding. It also has a very diverse class structure, it takes a very very very long time to reach the top tier of the class's. And you progress through your class by winning x number of battles but you also receive xp for going up levels.

I'd also suggest Fire emblem which is a strategy game with RPG elements. This is for the gamboy games.

Chrono cross & chrono trigger both would probably need to be emulated.

There are more but they escape me for right now.

Super Mario RPG, and the Paper Mario Series. Now, this is assuming you want a JRPG, not a western one, I don't know many western RPG's.

I second the nominations of the Dragon Quest and Paper Mario series as well as Chrono Trigger. Although, I don't quite understand your problem these are simple but fun RPG's...

FF4, and FF6 are both masterpieces (as the old school ones go, 7,9 and 10 are also excellent)
Chrono Trigger

Phantasy Star, also decent

Golden sun, not really an 'old school' game but in that style.

Final Fantasy Tactics, bit more of a strategy game but it's very RPG heavy

Old school you say? Try NetHack. (PC)

Beware, it's extremely difficult to a non-spoiled player (some people play for years without winning), but is absolutely addicting.

And its free :)

Grandia can get it on the ps1 *cough*iso, one of the best jrpgs around and oddly enough quite under the radar very well designed combat system using a active time battle bar, you can interupt opponents spells being cast and in some cases lock an enemy out from attacking for some time and often its needed.
