Also, you may wish to try the Baldur's Gate saga. Get Baldur's Gate 1 + expansion (Tales Of The Sword Coast) & Baldur's Gate 2 + expansion (Throne Of Bhaal) and mod for widescreen support and the BGTuTu or BGT mods to unify them all into a single game that uses the superior Baldur's Gate 2 engine and ruleset. 80+h of RPG entertainment guaranteed.
Wow that sounds amazing i recently embarked on a mission to play as many bio ware games as i can and i have been looking forward to picking up Baldurs Gate and that mod sounds amazing. Think you could Pm a link?
With the TuTu BG1 is simply in the BG2 engine when BG1 finishes you have import your character into the BG2 campaign to continue.
BG Trilogy is better as your character passes seamlessly from BG1 to BG2

the link: http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt

and a link for a resolution mod: http://www.gibberlings3.net/downloads/
(it's near the bottom of that list and works nicely at 3840x1024 so I figure it'll work any resolution)

And yes you could be playing that for a very long time.

Battlefield (any game) - they are all amazingly good. Battleforge is an RTS with a twist that I recently found; it's free to download from ea so worth a try in any case. :D

Mount and Blade!

Sure, the graphics arent as polished as other games out there, but once you get the hang of it, it's a sweet game.

Plus the sheer number of mods available is great - I'd recommend Europe 1200 and Lords and Realms.

PCs excel in several areas, FPS games as I'm sure you know, and strategy games.

As has been mentioned Civilization is a must - it doesn't actually matter if it's 2, 3, 4 or FreeCiv (all are good and have their own merits).

Also, in terms of space strategy there's Sins of a Solar Empire and Homeworld that definitely deserve looking into.

For shooters, take a look at Descent 3 - it's an old game but there hasn't been anything like it in the past decade.

Unreal Tournament is also worth looking into, either 2K4 or 3 as it's one of the strongest deathmatch shooters as well as having some really good team modes.

RPG wise, Guild Wars is definitely worth looking into, although you might as well wait for GW2 to be released as it looks to be better in many ways.

You will also likely love Deus Ex, as it's a shooter with some strong RPG elements.

The Sam & Max games are good for a shift from fast paced shooty-bang-bang to actually thinking and getting a good chuckle out of it. Then watching a little rabbit do all the shooty-bang-bang.

My PC game knowledge is limited to say the least, so other suggestions would probably be better to look into.
I am, however, throwing out another Team Fortress 2 recommendation. If you like it, it'll keep you occupied for hours.

competitive? that is an UNDERSTATEMENT. you know that scene in southpark during the wow episode when they get spoon fed and they have someone to help them crap while they play? that is how korean players train. they hire people to do that. no joke, was in a report. that's the reason i stay away from starcraft. its full of people who take it way too seriously.
I hope you're trolling.

Anyways, Starcraft is as competitive as any other game with multiplayer. You're going to run into competitive players. You're also going to run into noobs.

I personally don't play melee. Especially not when I can play the custom user maps.
