Good Planet Names

I recently bought Galactic Civilizations II and while it has been really fun to play, I always have a problem that causes me to save and quit and never end up going back to it...I suck at naming things. Anytime a chance to name a planet or fleet/ship comes up I always stare at the screen and blank out for 5 minutes before saving and going "I'll come up with a name later" which I of course never do.

So I wanted to ask people here what they think would be a good planet name for the Terran Alliance (Humans) or really any of the other civilizations of the game. As well, any names for fleets, ships, or ship designs would be greatly appreciated!

Read a few Warhammer 40k novels, they tend to have some good names in em.

And i'm probably not the first, but isn't Terra a good name for the human homeworld?

To go with a complete cliche, you should name the largest class of shop Titans or Leviathans. As for planets, Aether, Aqua, Gaia, or just pick something that sounds good to you.

Grab a book of mythological creatures, people and deities and you should be golden. Thor, Odin, Heracules, Mercury, Tiamat, Osiris, Isis, Set, Vishnu, Anansi, I could go on but you get the idea.

I am disappointed at this thread's lack of "Urectum" suggestion thusfar. Shame on all of you!

A Planet that serves as a gateway or portal to something so to speak will be named "Pandora" and the first Earth like planet we discover will bear the name "Terra Nova". "Elysium" would also be probable, we humans are rather predictable sometimes.

I'm no expert but here's a few things I'd recommend.

1. Pick something that's most definitely pronounceable. It shouldn't be too complicated and should more or less sound as it looks.
2. If it's some weird alien sounding name, the humans should have a name of their own for it.
3. Heavily populated planets shouldn't have simple LV-426 style designations. Those are the kind of names you give to crappy balls of rock not worth properly naming, not super advanced spaceports or whatever.
4. Try to go easy on names that are heavily used, not just as planet names but the kind that pop up just about everywhere, especially Greek or Roman mythological ones. Names like Artemis, Erebus and Andromeda have been done to bits. Then again, its better to pick a heavily used name rather than defy point no.1.

I always leave the default names when playing GalCiv, because when you play on large maps it's a real pain to think up names for 100+ colonies, unless you name them all 'Hail great leader' or something.
Alternatively, get a terror star. 10 minutes with one of those babies and there won't be so many planets left to name.

Get a list of star names, then just number the planets, if you have that many to name. Something like... I dunno... Omicron Persei 8. That's a good, strong name for a planet, I think?

Captcha: foul smelling. No need to get personal, Captcha.

There is only one correct answer when talking about naming planets:
[quote-Titan A.E.] Akima: What are you going to call it?
Cale: I think I'm going to call it... 'Bob'.
Akima: Bob?
Cale: You don't like Bob?
Akima: You can't call a planet 'Bob'!
Cale: Oh, so now you're the boss. You're the king of Bob.
Akima: Well, no, but...
Cale: What?
Akima: Can't we just call it 'Earth'?
Cale: Well, no one said you had to live on Bob.[/quote]
