After having seen some reviews of older point and click adventure games (space quest and kings quest were notable) i wanted to ask if anyone could reccomend any good ones on steam. i noticed both kings quest and space quest collections were there, but it said something about needing a different OS. no idea... anyway recommendations are appreciated

I highly recommend "Time Gentleman, Please" and "Ben there, Dan that" if you are looking for humor.

Also, the Longest Journey if you are just looking for a really good game in general.

I picked up the strong bad season 1 games and I enjoyed them, entertaining games. Maybe a little on the easier side but it still gave me plenty of game time.

I think you can also pick up a free Sam and Max game, one of their games (I think it's the one about lincoln) is offered free.

or you could check out yahtzee's point and click game 'Trilby'

The two Monkey Island special editions are great and cheap. Amazing. Also Sam & Max.

I enjoyed Machinarium. A steampunk robot PnC game. Very nice graphically and quite challenging to me (I don't play many PnC games, so it may not be, I dunno).

Why does it have to be on Steam?
Some of the good point 'n click games I played: A Vampyre story, Alternativa, Barrow Hill, Sinking Island, Black Mirror series, Culpa Innata, Return to Mysterious Island series, Syberia series, The Longest Journey, Alter Ego, Gray Matter, Lost Horizon, Machinarium, Scratches, The White Chamber (this one is free)... At least some of them should be on Steam.

I hear Jolly Rover is a great tribute to Monkey Island. I've not tried it myself, but I've heard only good things from people that give it a shot.

I also hear The Longest Journey is great, but I couldn't get into the demo.

Maybe Sam and Max? Is that an adventure game? ...I know little about it, but I like the developer's mindset.

I think you just need ScummVM to play old Sierra games. http://www.scummvm.org/

The Longest Journey.

Well... sort of. I couldn't honestly reccomend the game without a crap ton of caveats.

Some of the puzzles are retarded and the story gets pretty damn silly at times, with some truly bizarre plot twists.

However, the humour is good and the main character is bloody awesome. Not awesome in a "badass" sort of way, but awesome as in very humanized and likeable.

Plus, it's only ten bucks.

Hmm, I thought you could but apparently Steam's version already includes something similar (DOSBox) and it doesn't seem to work well in Vista or 7. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=670
But, at least you can play King's Quest I, II and III since these guys http://www.agdinteractive.com/ made remakes that should work and they are free.

To be honest, the only one that I'm playing at the moment on steam is the Back to the Future adventure games. They're somewhat short but really fun and worth the money I payed for them. Go ahead and check them out if you want.
