Good RPG's and RPG's like Diablo in general.

Because I'm really getting tired of short action games, such as first- and third-person shooters, I've decided to fatten my shelf with more RPG-games. I find it difficult these days to find any good RPG in general, with so many RPG's being exclusive to the X360.

I love games like Diablo and Torchlight, where you just have a lot of fun, and don't need a strong narrative. I also -LOVE- long and deep RPG's such as the Elder Scrolls series and Final Fantasy VII and VIII. I've tried XII but I found it quite difficult and just a little... boring, it depended so heavily on tedious grinding.

I wonder if Folklore, Rise of the Argonauts, Divinity II, FFXIII, Titan Quest, Sacred 2 and Demon's Souls are good RPG's. Right, before I forget, in your opinion, what Final Fantasy games do you recommend?

I own a very beefy PC and PS3. If anyone could recommend me one, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Dragon Age, well most things by BioWare in Steam is a good place to go PC wise, in fact, look up the RPG section in steam and look for reviews and gameplay videos, I do only gives me a good on occasionally though.

As for PS3, honestly I couldn't recommend one, can't really name any I've played on mine.

Mount and Blade Warband looks excellent.

Ancient DOS games Phantasie I-III were excellent if you can find them and download them. Dated as they are, they're very fun. Of the Final Fantasy games, I only enjoyed the old NES versions and the game boy games. Though Tactics was fun too.

Fallout 3 is okay, but not in the same whole genre as the rest of the RPGs that you're talking about.

Full of awesome, well fleshed-out characters (every one has a video clip outlining their origin, which is my favourite part of the game) and it's clicky RPG fun.

Demon's Souls is pretty good, but I wouldn't recommend any of those other games to be honest.

However if you want a fun game in the spirit of Diablo 2, try a Diablo 2 mod! MedianXL is like Diablo 2 cranked to 11 with tons of new stuff, and is free. Them's fighting words, because that's completely wrong! Cross out Bioware and put in Activision, yeah, but Bioware constantly mixes up gameplay mechanics, settings, stories etc... They've constantly made new franchises in an industry where most of the big franchises are up to something something 4: the rehashening.

A few come to mind, but they are old games.

I think a good rule of thumb is to avoid all those based on pen and paper games. When they convert to computer they tend to lose something. It isn't just the free mobility, there is something more lost cause but I just can't seem to figure out how to describe it.

In any case, go for RPGs that where never made for pen and paper games to begin with, but designed purely for computer. Think this is why the likes of Diablo and fallout (originals) worked so well. There wasn't something better and greater before it, so it didn't loose anything in the path.

Arcanum still is a favourite, though it gets too easy if you follow necromancy: black.

Torchlight and Titan Quest are pretty much the go-to's for Diablo 2-esque hacky-slashy goodness.

I'm an advocate of the old-school Final Fantasies (the new ones are... well... meh.) beleiving that FF6 (or 3 as it was dubbed for the US SNES release) was the last really good one. It's my personal favorite, but anything from 6 back to 1, except Mystic Quest, is worth the time to track down. It might even be worth the $10 on PS3 store to buy and dwonload FF7 to give that one a try... just be wary of fanboys. FF13 may be worth a try if you like 7.

I would also advise getting a mod for Diablo 2 like Eastern Sun or MedianXL and trying those out if you can't find a Hack'nSlasher you enjoy.

Also look into Fallout 1,2,3 and Tactics. Edler Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowwind and expansions, Dragon Age: Origin & expansion, Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 and expansions, Baldur's Gate 2 & expansion (if you can *find* it) are also all really enjoyable RPG's. Anything put out by Black Isle and later BioWare is going to be worth its weight in RPG gold.


I'd also reccomend some of the older Might and Magic Games (5, 6 and 7 to be specific, haven't played the "new" ones except Dark Messiah which was decent, but not really a "go buy this" game) and if you don't mind the turn-based strategy, Heroes of Might and Magic 2, 3, and 5. The older Might and Magic games might not run to great on new systems, they're pretty ancient. I'll have to check and see if the guys at GoodOldGames(dot)com have gotten thier mitts on them... (good site for retro gamers, by the way)

Sacred 2 is a kick ass game. I highly recommend it.

As has been said Mount & Blade is good fun. Try the demo on Steam to see if you like it. I've only gotten it recently and I've been playing nearly non-stop.

In all seriousness, Demons Souls is long, and extremely hard. (Whoa, another one!)
It's frustrating, but it's worth it. Problem is actually finding the game!

Divinity and Risen are good on PC, but the 360 and PS3 version are just..no.

Also, try Depths of Peril, its a 9 dollar game on steam.
Hinterland is also a good cheap diablo like game.

Titan quest feels kind of sluggish compared to Torchlight, but it's a really fun game and definitely worth the 20$ or so you'd pay for it on Steam (or retail, if you can find it.)
I didn't really like Sacred 2 but I can't really explain why.
Dragon Age: Origins is great, though it's not quite like Diablo. It's got a great story, though, and I haven't even beaten it.
