im a big RTS fan but i really dont like base building, my problem with it is 2 fold.

1. it removes from the RTS element's i like, i enjoy leading troops into battle and trying to outwit my opponent and destroy his forces but in base building games i spend allot of time micro-ing my build order, sim city style which i dont find very fun

2. it creates a delayed loss, as in i know that once the enemy has taken that resource den im doomed, he has more resources than me so can create more resource gathering buildings than me, get resources quicker than me, can train more troops/better troops than me and all that remains between him and victory is 10-20 minutes worth of grinding down my defenses (this is equally tedious both ways)

can anyone recommend me some base building free RTS games?
or a RTS game with base building but without these draw backs?

(i have already played total war)

Dawn of War 2: Retribution.
Great squad based RTS, you only start with a HQ, 2 defensive turrets, your hero and a squad of soldiers(be it Scout Squads as Space Marines, Hormagaunts as Tyranids or Slugga Boyz as Orks) and the only other things you can build are more turrets, support structures that give bonuses to your squads(only certain heroes can do either of these) and power generators.

You capture requisition points on the map as the basic resource and power nodes for fancier units and upgrades.

This game is all about your squads. If you lose your starting squad and another squad within the first few minutes of a 1v1 game, you might as well just concede the match there.

Multiplayer is fun yet irritating(like most RTSs in my opinion), you have 1v1(a pain in the ass), 2v2(much more balanced), 3v3(never tried it yet myself), 2v2v2(same as the previous) and I think an absolute free for all.
Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising have great singleplayer campaigns. But if you're looking for multiplayer, get Retribution. Its a standalone expansion.

check it out, epic fantasy battles. Your purchase an army with points and you get no reinforcments, limited heals, team damage and absolute carnage.

And yes it will set you back like 10 dollars so its worth checking out. I also reccomend checking out the website www.marius.net for information how to get online

World in Conflict.

It's a modern-era RTS without base-building or resource management. You can control Helicopters, Infantry, Armor and mobile artillery. The campaign is great, and it's a great game to play with friends.

Random screenshots:

Yes, you can call in nuclear strikes.

It's also 20$ US on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1471/)

As others have said, the Dawn of War 2 series puts more emphasis in the combat rather than base-building. Check it out.

There is the Dawn of war 2 series, the first one is very much base building but the second has a focus on more tactical combat instead.
Company of heroes has got some base building but is still more focused on combat.

There is also Star wars: Empire at war. Now this does have some base building while you managed your Empire/rebellion on the galaxy screen, you build factories or mines on planets and such. You create all your units here then when a battle begins you go into either the view for a space battle or land battle.
You don't build units in battle, you only have the ones you brought in your fleet. There is a limit to how much you can have at once, the others count as reinforcements which you can bring in at any time. On land you need to have captured a landing area for them, in space they can just hyperspace in wherever.

I would mention C&C4 since I hear they removed all base building from that because they suck and had no idea what they were doing and it's also supposedly a level up to win model which is bad. I haven't played it and only know anything about it from hearsay but that could be one to look into.
I would recommend not doing that though since it was apparently horrible.

Once again, my vote goes to Dawn of War II: Retribution. Not only does it have no basebulding but it's by far the best DoWII game.

Men of War doesn't have base building...but it's very "realistic". Aka, individual tanks and squads have ammunition and fuel.

I put realistic in quotes because as far as I'm concerned, it would be the quarter master's and squad member's jobs to manage ammo, not the general's. I personally don't play it because CoH does enough of what I want to do and is less "argh how do I do stuff" for me.

Same here, CoH is the first game that jumps to mind. Practically zero base-building, although it is advised to build defense bunkers and the like and put some machine gunners in there.
Mostly all tactics, flanking, and using cover. Yeah, it's a cover-based RTS, but the system works quite well. Also it has destruction physics - you can blow up anything in a different way each time.

Company of Heroes springs to mind. Yes, there is base building, but it is very light when compared to something Age of Empires of Warcraft. The focus is much more on tactics than on base building. There is still some of it though, so if you want absolutely zero base building, look elsewhere. Otherwise, check it out. It is just a damn excellent game anyway you slice it. :)

Yeah C&C 4 was one of the worst games I have ever played. I've just spent a few minutes trying to think of a single redeeming factor for that game and am still coming up empty.

I'm pretty sure most of the ones I've heard of have been mentioned by this point, RUSE might fit, but I haven't played it and don't know much about it.

well, Company of Heroes and Dawn of War II are both good choices, and relatively recent.
If you don't mind the older graphics try Sudden Strike (I & II), Ground Control (I & II), Blitzkrieg, or Desert Rats vs Afrika Korps. I enjoyed all very much, though SS can be a little hard at some times.
Also, does Homeworld count? You do produce units and gather resources the old-fashioned way (harvesting), but there's no buildings...just the Mothership. (Actually, if you haven't played Homeworld yet, DO IT!).

Hope this helps.

Yup, World in Conflict is great game, although every mission seems to end with just spamming each other with air support.
