It probably isn't a fine book. I just loved it. You want war, space ships, technology and a lot of personality and human interest? Try Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough For Love". It got me reading just about all of his other stuff, which includes a lot of cross over characters.

Another philip K. Dick novel you might like is We Can Remeber it for You Wholesale
I have to remember to read this one ASAP. I saw both Total Recall movies. Arnie is much better than the new flick. More than any of the other adaptations, this one I want to read.

Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep?
It's by Philip K Dick so i'm sure you'll enjoy it if you liked A Scanner Darkly.
If I recall correctly, wasn't blade runner based on i]Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?[/i]?
You are correct! I read the book first however and there are quite a lot of changes that they made in the film Blade Runner and I vastly prefer the book.

As always my first recommendation: The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway

Other than that:

Neal Asher's Polity universe (especially the Ian Cormack series)
Peter F. Hamilton's Commonwealth series
Dan Simmon's Hyperion Cantos
Alastair Reynold's Revelation Space series
Philip K. Dick is also always worth it

David Brin's Uplift series is an excellent series. Also recommend anything by Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game and the like). Alfred Bester's Tiger Tiger - Also called The Stars my Destination I think - is an awesome read. Richard Matheson's I am Legend.

People have already mentioned John Wyndham - Day of the Triffids and The Crysalids; HG Wells; William Gibson - Neuromancer.

I'll further recommend anything by Iain M Banks and William Gibson but will also add the Hyperion books by Dan Simmons

I wouldn't. Its a short story, less than 20 pages long if I remember correctly. It also has about as much to do with either film as they have with each other.

WOOL by Hugh Howey

Amazing post-apocalyptic sci-fi. Howey's audience is growing pretty quickly, and with good reason. He's great at writing interesting characters and believable worlds.

Also for a super short one, check out Howey's "The Plagiarist".

It's only 60 pages, 99 cents on Kindle, and it's amazing.

Someone also mentioned Neuromancer. That's a great one, too. It pretty much pioneered the concept of cyberspace and started the cyberpunk genre. As good as it is now it must've blown people's minds back in the 80s when it came out.

His Dark Materials Trilogy

Says Phillip Pullman on the reaction to his trilogy of children's books: "I've been surprised by how little criticism I've got. Harry Potter's been taking all the flak? Meanwhile, I've been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God."

My favorite book series after The Lord of The Rings.

The "Starfishers" series by Glen Cook was a great space opera. However I prefer him for his war fantasy "The Chronicles of the Black Company".

If not, I had a great time with "Enders Game" though I have yet to continue the series. And I hear the overall series is worth the read.

"Anathem" by Neal Stephenson demands a lot of its readers in the beginning, and so is probably the least praised of his recent works, even by fans. I initially gave up on it, then picked it up again a year later, stuck with it, and my perseverance was well rewarded. I started rereading it the day after finishing. Couldn't stop thinking about it for several days.

"Snow Crash" is a lot more user-friendly, and a very good read as well.

You have already mentioned Honorverse in your read list, so why not read the Bolo! series. It's about sentient battle tanks with discussions on philosophy and loyalty.
That caught my eye better than anything on the list...

I appreciate the suggestions, and while I won't discount anything, but a lot of the stuff mentioned here was single books, which I will pick up eventually, but I was really hoping for a good series. I think I may just check out Bolo! right now...

And one novel was released as a BaenCD and is online for free.

I didn't realise that David Webber co-authored some of the stories until now.

I'm failing to see how His Dark Materials is sci-fi... it's more Steampunk/fin de siecle fantasy than anything else.

It was my favorite young adult series while growing up. I think it can have as much, if not more, appeal for adults as Harry Potter and the like.
