I'm looking to buy a good Space combat / strategy game, something of the RTS or 4X genre, can anyone recommend any good ones?

I'm partial to the more combat side of things, I bought Galactic Civilizations 2 but wasn't very impressed with it though, anyways, any good recommendations?

I highly recommend Sins of a solar empire, its the sort of game that you can lose days to quite easily. The expansion packs are worth getting and there are hundreds of mods available for it.

ow you are gonna love this.
the games you should play are X-series. The X games are all very alike, space combat space building and space merchanting. And all the X games are extreemly hardcore no holding hands here with an overdone tutorial, so it might be hard to step in but its even harder to steb out.

I have played X2-The threat over 200 hours X-tension over 50 and X-beyond the frontier over 100.

I reccomed starting with X3-reunion or X2, have fun with this massive timesink.

I'll say Sins of a Solar Empire too. It's a real time 4X game. A little light on the diplomacy side, but other than that it's great. If you do buy it, get the expansions too, or the trinity release which has the expansions included.

Haegemonia: Legions of Iron

Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity

Galactic Civilizations II: Endless Universe

Gratuitous Space Battles

Conquest: Frontier Wars

Freelancer

HOMEWORLD

Master Of Orion II: Battle At Antares

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds - It's basically "Age of Empires 2 + Star Wars"

Sword Of The Stars - It gets better with the expansions

X2/X3:X3 Terran Conflict - Good series all around

Any game in the Homeworld Series

Space Pirates And Zombies

If you don't mind older games then Escape Velocity Nova (usually just referred to as EV Nova or EVN) might also be worth a look.

Thank you for the recommendations guys.

I've basically narrowed my choices down to Homeworld 2, or Sins of a Solar Empire.

Which, in your opinion, would be the better?

I've also looked at X3 gameplay, it looks like an offline EVE! I'll be sure to pick it up if I get the spare cash.

Sins of a Solar Empire is really good, as is AI War: Fleet Command and Gratuitous Space Battles.

Your best bet is Homeworld, a truly epic old series of RTS by the masters of the genre themselves; Relic.

Most people seem to agree that the first Homeworld was best, Homeworld: Cataclysm second, and Homeworld 2 the worst of the series which still isn't saying much because Homeworld 2 I still found to be fantastic with some genuinely amazing mods available. But there you go, all certainly worth playing no doubt about that.

Curious why you didn't like GalCiv2? Just too heavy on the diplomatic/economic side of things as opposed to the action or was there another problem? I ask out of curiosity as it's one of my favourite 4x out there.

I haven't played Homeworld 2, but to me it looks like a more standard real time strategy. I could be wrong, but I think Sins of a Solar Empire has much larger scale, and plays more like a 4X type game. It just happens to be real time.

Having not played homeworld I can only recommend SINS the scope of the game is truly enormous especially when you get to playing the larger maps. Even the small maps, around 10-20 planets take a good few hours to complete. The huge maps of 60+ planets take days. I love SINS, the only thing about the game which disappointed me was its lack of story or campaign mode.
