I got into a discussion with a friend of mine about gaming when he brought up an interesting challenge.

He asked me to name good games which aren't sequels and do no HAVE sequels

It was at this point that I was slightly stumped.

So I decided to pass this question to you, how many good(being subjective) stand-alone game titles.

As of now, I only have:
Bayonetta
God Hand
Psychonauts

He does not count reboots or certain reimaginings(apparently, Ico and shadow of the colossus are related)

Arcanum: Of SteamWorks and Magick Obscura
Bastion
Crimsonland (shaky - the different versions show quite a difference. I've played 1.3 and 1.9.8 the most and they...look the same from a casual glance. Play the same at the bare bones)
Death Illustrated (well, opinions may vary, I love it. Cool shooter, which you can get free)
Frozen Synapse
Magicka
Minecraft
Planescape: Torment
Psychonauts
Second Sight
Spore (again, I personally love it.) *EDIT* forgot that there was Darkspore
Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines (technically not a sequel at all but tied in a larger whole)

From the top of my head in alphabetical order.

A good list. I would add To The Moon, Pirates!, Sacrifice and Alpha Protocol. Maybe TOEE as well.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Do expansions count as "sequels"? I'm wondering if Alan Wake counts?

Skies of Arcadia - We WISH there was a sequel, but it stands alone in the night, howling with awesome.

Shadow Madness - An RPG by Crave which holds up an original flavor and plot, two-disc game with the unique ability to 'duck' random encounters if you so want.

Extermination - It has cheesy Survival Horror dialogue, but it's a good game overall.

Bastion, Alpha Protocol and Bayonetta are ones I can think of offhand.

Yes how much you enjoyed AP may have been dependant on how badly the good old "Obsidian can't make a nonbuggy game to save their lives" thing hit you but i've had zero problems with the game technically and you're basically playing James Bond 2.0

Hmm, League of Legends and DOTA 2 from a multiplayer standpoint. LoL is fun as hell, if a bit ragey at times and I'm waiting for my probably randomly selected and never going to come DOTA 2 beta invite now actually. Everything in DOTA 2 looks horrendously OP and insane. SO HYPE

Love how Valve gives zero estimated time on the invite. Could be tomorrow, could be a week could be a month... Hate that sort of non-specific timing.

Plus most of those pulls and stuns can be done to your teammates for maximum trolling and life saving shenanigans! I really like that for some reason. I'm already liking Blitzcrank 2.0 AKA Pudge (the fat guy with the long range hooks if I got his name wrong)

New "AND BLITZCRANK WITH THE PUUUULLLLL!!!11111!" potential right there XD

W/E i'm maining Broodmother for sure. Spiders FTW!

Grim Fandango
Master of Magic
Fantasy General
Space Marine
Braid
Minecraft
Terraria

(Alpha Centauri) It does have an expansion pack.

I could probably go on for a while if I went through my attic or game related sites.

Hmmm this is a VERY good question. I was first thinking that good games wouldn't be tough, but great games would, but then I could only come up with:

L.A. Noire
Jade Empire
Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in US)

Baron von Blitztank

Shadows of The Damned
Grim Fandango
Asura's Wrath
Bully (Canis Canem Edit.)
Minecraft
Killing Floor
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
Bulletstorm*
Vanquish*

* = Leaves room for a sequel at the end, but as of yet nothing has come up about it.

I consider Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to be stand-alone. That's just me though. It could have been an awesome anthology series ya know but that didn't seem to happen for some reason. Its like the developers used all of that sweet FU money to buy and huff paint.

...

sorry.

Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth is really good.
XIII is also really good
Minecraft
Psychonaughts

...that's about it off the top of my head.
