I Ninja
Legend of Kay
Psi-Ops
I have a bookcase full of PS2 titles that never got any spotlight.

EDIT: Oh, and Call of Duty. That was fun defending that tank factory from German Panzerschreks.

Since I'm lazy I'll just say Bastion and Shadow of the Colossus. And no, SotC is not a prequel to ICO IMO. It makes no sense to me for now. More like an easter egg than an actual prequel.

I'm saying "The World Ends with You" for the DS. Apparently there's rumours of a sequel, but Square seems more interested in tech demos and more bloody sequels to that atrocious FFXIII game. I was heartened to see Neku in KH3D(Which ISN'T A SEQUEL.)
Also, am I allowed to put FFVI in because, although it uses elements of previous final fantasies, it's plot is still self-contained?

Arcanum: Of SteamWorks and Magick Obscura
Bastion
Crimsonland (shaky - the different versions show quite a difference. I've played 1.3 and 1.9.8 the most and they...look the same from a casual glance. Play the same at the bare bones)
Death Illustrated (well, opinions may vary, I love it. Cool shooter, which you can get free)
Frozen Synapse
Magicka
Minecraft
Planescape: Torment
Psychonauts
Second Sight
Spore (again, I personally love it.)
Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines (technically not a sequel at all but tied in a larger whole)

From the top of my head in alphabetical order.
A good list. I would add To The Moon, Pirates!, Sacrifice and Alpha Protocol. Maybe TOEE as well.
Do you realize that To The Moon ending is sequel bait that is actually being made? Of course, that without it would be a excelent stand alone game.

...wow this is much harder than I thought it would be. Most games I play are or have sequels.

Planescape: Torment is good and doesn?t have a sequal.

Mirrors edge doesn't have a sequal but they intended there to be one, it just got canned and you can tell so I don't know if it really counts.

The Void which I am currently playing doesn?t have a sequel but I'm still trying to decide if it?s good or not.

Does Dark Souls/Demon's Souls count? There's a bit of canon welding going on, and the gameplay is similar, but otherwise they're completely standalone.

Psychonauts, Jade Empire, Bastion, the Maw, The Legend of Dragoon, Painkiller? (it never had a proper sequel, I think, Magicka, Minecraft, Terraria, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, Fortune Summoners (I think), Chantelise, Ib, Yume Nikki, Limbo, Jamestown...

If I think any more, I might make something in my head burst, so I'll leave it at that.
Edit: sorry for double post. Stupid fuckup internet...

(Alpha Centauri) It does have an expansion pack.

I could probably go on for a while if I went through my attic or game related sites.
Technically Alpha Centauri *is* a sequel to Civilization, the whole concept of the game that the starship that seeds the colonists is the one that Civ players build during the science victory.

Also, Fantasy general, while not a direct sequel, is a spinoff of the Panzer General series. It's more a total conversion than a standalone product.

OP: By your definition, would games that don't have sequels or aren't sequels, but have settings licensed from existing products, like D&D and the Warhammer series qualify as standalone?

Outcast and Tyrian spring to mind, Advent Rising if games-that-were-meant-to-have-sequels-but-didn't count (was severely underrated I think.) Also Shogo M.A.D, Silver, any of the unique lucasarts adventure titles like DoTT, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. Interestingly gets harder the more I think of RECENT games, apart from the tons of indie titles.

Alan Wake

(blah blah blah)

Far Cry (Neither Far Cry 2 nor Crysis were even close to sequels)
Look, if Alan Wake's American Nightmare doesn't count as a sequel, then I'm nominating Far Cry 2, and following your logic FC2 is acceptable anyway.

Do not repeat this to anyone: I'm willing to assert that Metro 2033 might have been good...
IF the developers promise never to make a sequel. Ever. Not even a FC/FC2 kind of thing.

DayZ - yes, its a mod based on ARMA II, so its an MMO that is based on an existing game with a much different objectives. But its being developed to be a standalone game.

L.A. Noire is an outstanding stand-alone game. A must-have for fans of the noir-esque detective.
