For the most part, I tend to stick with RPG's, platformers and puzzle games, but there's such a glut of FPS's out that I feel I am ignoring the good ones by avoiding the entire genre. Although, part of the reason I tend to avoid them is that I am pretty terrible at them, especially those on a console. Can anyone recommend a good FPS for someone with pretty much no skill at them as both an introduction and a learning platform?

why not try Borderlands or Fallout 3 since those are both shooters with rpg elements so the switch may seem a bit more comfortable

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a game I'd say you should try. Any of the three (well, I have not played the third yet).

If you're into puzzles, then go with The Orange Box. That'll give you a feel for each type of good FPS: puzzle, singleplayer, and multiplayer.

Prey is where I started. about 1/5 of the way in, you can't die. Great intro to FPS gaming. STALKER is a no, its brutally hard at times.

And its only like 10 bucks now. It's on PC and 360.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
It´s a bit short, granted, but the awesome plot more than makes up for that.
Also, there´s a second one coming in a week or two, so if you end up loving it, you´ll be in for another treat soon :)

Aside from above, give Halo (1 or ODST) a shot, since the games are pretty simple in heart, and while the story might not win you over, it's a good game to transition yourself between RPGs and FPSs.

Start with a third person game, many of the controls carry over, andI find them less twitch based. The GRAW games are good. If you're set on first person, R6 is a great series. CoD 2 can be found on the cheap.

CoD4 definitely, one of the best shooters out there. Half-Life 2 and it's subsequent episodes are also amazing shooters for single-player.

Don't try STALKER, it is pretty hard, and if you suck at FPS games, and are new to them, well, not the best started game (but a good game).
Maybe a Call of Duty, could try Half-Life 2 or maybe Halo. Fallout 3 and Borderlands are also some good ones.

If you want to get into FPS games, get the orange box. All the games here are staples of the FPS genre and if you don't like any of these games you will not like the FPS genre at all. This doesn't mean that you won't like FPS/RPG games though.

CoD 4, Orange Box, Borderlands (Easy one), and Fallout 3, not really a shooter, since you can kill anything in VATs but it's alright.

I started with Wolfenstien 3d. (or maybe Catacombs Abyss, I can't remember.)

Both of those are good, then you can work your way through the generations till you found a game you like. :)

Don't go for Call of Duty 4, go for Call of Duty 2, the D-day level is simply one of the best levels in any first person shooter

Why not stick with Left 4 Dead? Cheap, Reliable, Single or Multi and it will teach you a lot of the tricks you'll need later.

The non-Treyarch Call of Duty games are good learning games. I have converted many friends into FPS gamers through Infinity Ward's work.

As a huge fan of FPS games, I recommend the Orange Box for people who are new to the genre. You get the whole Half-Life saga from HL2 on, plus a puzzle FPS, plus an online FPS. You will enjoy it a lot.

Alternatively, Call of Duty 4 is also great fun, but it really assumes that you're already familiar with FPS games.
