Wow, my premise got owned, at least when it comes to books and old school games. Toy story is definitely a solid trilogy I didn't think of. People mentioned Assassins Creed, Mass Effect and Gears as good trilogies, but I don't think you can count them yet. They are all good starts but so was the Matrix, and so much of what makes a trilogy great (imo) is how it paces itself and wraps things up without getting too crazy. There's no guarantee that they'll be able to do that, especially looking at all the work they've left themselves in the third installment. They're in good hands for sure but I have my doubts.

(I'm not counting Brotherhood because I consider it more of a diversion than a full installment in the story, Assassins Creed 2.5 if you will.)

The Toy Story saga. Don't laugh at me, Pixar is awesome.
Toy Story is definitely one of the best movie trilogies ever. No question.
The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time trilogy, the Super Smash Bros trilogy, the Metroid Prime trilogy, God of War trilogy, and the original Ratchet & Clank trilogy on PS2.

That really makes no sense...

I agree with you on the GoW and Ratchet and Clank and I'll add Jak and Daxter.

That and the original Starwars trilogy are my submissions. Yes, they have been said above me. No, I will not change my response.

TimeSplitters...I can't stop being a fanboy for hope of recapturing nostalgia.
But I want them all released on XBLA. Never played the first one...

Also, Spiderman, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix and Lord of the Rings have a new film coming out soon:].
There's definitely no new Matrix films, that was a rumour which was swiftly quashed. I haven't heard of a new Lord of the rings film, it seems very unlikely seeing as how there's no more story to tell. Are you talking about The Hobbit film?

And to be extra picky, the Spiderman movie is a reboot, so will completely ignore the story from the other 3 movies.

Well, I know of a couple of triliogies that are good, but none where all three are great.

Jak and Daxter: I love the second and the third, but I didn't quite enjoy the first game...

Toy Story: I love the first and the third, but I never enjoyed in the second one, the whole time when woody was with his roundup at Al's place.

Alien: The first and second, I likey, but the third was meh. Nothing special. Also, there is a fourth movie, so it's not really a triliogy...

Lol you're right. I should change "possibly" to "definitely," it would make a lot more sense.

I guess the decay in quality occurs when the inspiration for the series, and the ideas the writers have for the story, begin to dry up, the later films noticeably suffer. The magic is gone, in a sense.

However, while this does happen often, there are quite a lot of great trilogies out there. The Star Trek movie trilogy of 2, 3, and 4 are great, as is the Jak series and Ratchet and Clank series for video games, Toy Story, The Evil Dead, and countless others I can't even begin to list.

There's a lot of great stuff out there, you just have to look in the right places

Farseer books by Robin Hobb
The Forever War (I admit, normally not a triology, but I read the comics, which are)

Recently played The Sly Cooper Trilogy and loved it! Though the Third one dragged a bit.

I shall defiantly be getting Sly 4!
