I'm thinking about organizing a Twilight burning in my town. We will get all the Twilight books, movies and merchandise and have Stephen King light them all on fire!!!

If Castlevania counts a vampire game, the you should check them all out (expect for the Nintendo 64 games). Their all amazing games.

okay so I instigated all the twilight bashing, and as much as I hate the series I don't want this thread to degenerate to sniping at it. So please if you have a good idea for the addition to the game post, then bash twilight, don't just bash for the sake of bashing.

@tsunamiwombat: lol thanks for the spoilers brah... haha j/k to be honest it's unlikely I'd be able to get into a top-down game... I'm incredibly picky when it comes to my games, the story sounds a bit out there, but I'm a sucker for a well executed story, and out there is my territory.

Vampire the Masquerade 2 :) Or a game where you are a real vampire and smash faces of characters from twilight with a sledgehammer
that would be fun.go make it,go make money,go get sued,go still be rich beacuse you make more money than sued for.go die in supermodel three-way.or not, your choice
lol at least it would be a happy ending.

what's this legacy of kain? did i miss something?

@nannernade: you've got a good point there that was pretty cool what bethesda did... and i wouldn't mind seeing it ripped off in another game.

I've always thought a good vampire game would have to have these elements.
1) more than one type of vampire: i loved what vampire the masquerade did with the whole clans thing that was brilliant
2) a love interest, and before you say that's gay i'd like to say how cool it would be if that love interest was a human and worked for you during the day, or protected you during daylight hours, or something... it would be nice to see a love interest pulled off in an actually engaging way... and let's face it romance and vampires kinda go hand in hand (to quote yahtzee yes my new vag is growing in nicely)
3) daylight does damage (twilighters can stfu)
4) sandbox type of game, i've played... was it bloodrayne? anyways yea it was linear and that kind of annoyed me... plus i'd love to be able to walk into a bar and get a drink
5) close relationship with your sire, and/or flashback scenes where your player controlled vampire 'remembers' something that happened to him a century ago, this would be a good way to vary gameplay (ex: find a safe hiding place while being chased by a mob with pitchforks and torches)
6) a van hellsing after your undead ass, what vampire is complete without one?
7) concealing the fact that you are a vampire, ex: no powers in front of people on the street(again a vampire the masquerade rip off, sue me that game had greatness in it) i can imagine points being deducted as the game shows a 'cellphone' pic that someone took as you were doing something cool like outrunning a car, or jumping over a building or lifting a car
8) health regeneration by drinking blood (again obvious)
9) health packs as blood packs

yea those are my contributions...
O_O I love it. You must become a game designer and create this gem for fans of proper vampires.
No patience for coding, I'm a network admin not a coder... I could be consulted on for a story!

@flyingemu: okay... so maybe i didn't explain that well, I do think that you could pull off the prototype running and jumping from rooftop to rooftop, and combine it with the need for stealth in the midst of crowds... and later in the game have a full out war between the supernatural going, leading to the eventual discovering of vampires by the population, and suddenly concealing what you are doesn't matter anymore. Again this would all be in the story-telling aspect of the game and would have to be done well.
Not a coder! O_O. Curses, this idea must be pitched!

yep not a coder, oh and you missed my more recent additions those original 9 were just me throwing stuff out there here's the full list.

8) health regeneration by drinking blood (again obvious)
9) health packs as blood packs

10) character customization, beyond that of joining a vampire clan, but also playing through a part (I would make this optional) where you're human and some decisions you make decide on how people interact with you later on. This could be done by selecting a preset bio (ex: your character was a thief, or a businessman), or it could literally be done by giving the character a preset amount of money and him deciding where to spend it (ex: inheritance from dead parents) and game content is decided based on what apartment/house you buy... what car you get... and what job/degree your character has. I would make this optional as i mentioned before because I hated the part where you were not a jedi in KOTOR 1 (the good one). You could choose to select all this based on text, but I would make it so gamers that play as a human up to their transition get rewarded with extra gear (again masquerade-esque, where you get the lockpick and other items you have to buy if you don't play the tutorial).

11) okay have to post this too, the ability in vampire masquerade to get a new apartment was pretty cool, but it really didn't affect the game. You should be able to purchase 'safe houses' or even a storage facility in a vampire game. It would also be nice to have a managed club in which you could invest money and attract victims... i mean customers. ala the castle you get in neverwinter nights... 'daily' quests could come from here from your customers, be it in taking care of a problem a girl is having with a stalker, or your bartender doesn't like certain people.

12) another thing i loved about masquerade was the bounty hunting side quest of the game. that should be incorporated as part of the game.

13) a tree of skills known as 'vampire senses' should be incorporated, i would love to be able to select a target from across the room, trigger 'hearing' and be able to listen in on his conversation, it would be a hard mechanic to program i would imagine, but you could use that for all sorts of things (see splinter cell on that one mission where you aim that laser device at the glass of the elevator to listen in on the convo)

14) again with the senses, to be able to follow someone's scent trail in game would be pretty cool, this to me would involve a character screen in which people you come into contact with are added based in 'smell', the ability to track down people based on this smell could be an integral part of locating people on bounty hunting quests (ex going to their apartment and smelling their laundry, then hunting)

15) one thing masquerade lacked was good night vision, there were ironically plenty of times in the dark that I couldn't see well and that struck me as odd, you could model this after prototype's 'infected vision'

16) ability to modify appearance... okay clothes in a game are seriously underrated in some areas, a vampire we assume is immune to cold and heat, so dressing your vampire in shorts and a t-shirt during a new york winter could draw attention to you... don't know how important this would be to a player, but yea there it is

17) on that note, thermal cameras and a gameplay mechanic of having to be freshly fed with warm blood to be able to get past one registering as human

18) 'modes' of appearance... okay in a lot of vampire stories you've got changing eye color and retractable fangs along with variation of pigment in skin color as willed by the vampire. now it can suck to switch between 'disguise' and 'combat' modes, but i still think at least bears consideration, and could be an effective way to switch from 'humans can't see me for what i am mode' and 'i'm going to kill you all mode'

19) you must be able to kill a werewolf at some point in time during the game

list is getting long... i was hoping more of you would contribute some good ideas... my apologies to the game developer that tries to pick up all this, at this point in time including all this could make for a disjointed or buggy game. really what i'd like to see is a game with my first 12 and number 15, i'd be more than happy with that.

Eh. I heard it mentioned, and I tried Legacy of Kain, and hated it. If you can manage, rent it before you buy. Wait. It's probably bargain-bin material by now, so at $5 or whatever you may as well buy it. Worth a look I guess, but the best way I can describe it is "God of War, but crappier graphics and controls, less likable characters, annoying environments, and vampires (which isn't inherently bad by any means)"

Personally, I don't understand why people hate Twilight so much. I don't care for it myself, but I can leave it alone if someone else does like it. It'd be a lot easier on everyone if the people who didn't like it just ignored it rather than whining about it.

So I'm entering this thread having only skimmed most of the replies - sorry, but some 60-odd long posts were interesting, but I did want to chime in myself.

I think there are thematically a number of ideas that would make for a very good story that could compliment a lot of interesting mechanics being thrown about here. Looking at the divide between stealthy vampires and strong vampires, I think it could be fun to give players the choice of how to approach a situation: charm their way around, or kill everything. But that might be hard to implement, and I'm not sure how fun charming people would be unless it was in a cutscene.

So onto my ideas:

-Give the main vampire character. As in, don't make him a mute, make him have plenty of lines, things he likes, dislikes, and can say during gameplay even if not in a cutscene. This would make cutscenes more versatile and fun, and would allow for a seductive/charming vampire parts to come through.
-Your sister is a vampire. You have someone to relate to, she's a super sexy vampire, but not a love interest because she's your sister, right? This is setting up something else.
-You can't create other vampires. For whatever reason the plot can explain, biting someone doesn't turn them into a vampire. Sure, draining their blood will kill them, but you can't make a whole world of vampires. This would help as the game wouldn't have to worry about that transformation happening within the game world, unless that was a story point.
-Become more powerful with the more blood you've taken/longer you've been a vampire. This leads naturally to good game progression. In the beginning you can't be in the sun, can't fly, etc, but by the end you are super powerful and can be in the sun.

One weird/cool plot point that I think could be interesting is, with my setup, the loneliness of immortality stemming from the vampire. For example, maybe he has a love interest, and she's naturally mortal, and the vampire tries to save her, doesnt infect her, etc. But eventually she'll get old and die - maybe at some point the main player will be buried for a number of years, and surfaces years later to find his love married to someone else, but long since dead. Whatever. Then there can be some weird romantic tension between the sister, hinting at how the only way they could find happiness is together. I know, it's weird, but hey, lots of literature is much more messed up (ever heard of author William Faulkner?) and could make it creepy/good. Who knows.

Ok, if a video game developer actually managed to take all of this, put it in a vampire game and pull it off well. I would willingly sit in front of an EB games, in the dead of a Canadian winter at -45C for a week to get it. (As long as I have my hot chocolate and a warm comforter)

hehe same here, but I'd do it naked in the snow. It's nice to talk about, but honestly I'll never see the game in my head realized... onward though.

haha yes! solid ideas... okay so I have to ask did you play masquerade? cause the first one (i thought) was addressed well. In every situation you were given multiple responses and you could choose how you wanted to handle the situation... plus extra dialogue options were opened if you had put points in charm, persuasiveness, and... intimidation almost forgot about that. The one thing that disappointed me though was the mechanic itself almost made you regret throwing your points into these areas... they didn't help you with boss fights at all. I would love to see a boss fight that you could persuade your way out of... or lower his/her stats by having a high enough seduction level (they don't really want to kill you), or lower their stats because they're afraid of you (intimidation).

I could see your sibling (sister/brother) becoming a vampire, but what I really could imagine is this. You and your sibling are without parents and when you get vampirism the only thing you want to do is turn them. So you do. This could lead to a storyline where they hate you for turning them, etc. Or vice versa, and if you choose to take the bleeding martyr (oh god i'm a monster...) view you can kill them for turning you. This could tie into why you don't create anymore vampires. Or hell they could love you like you describe... it would be a creepy storyline, but hey vampires are meant to be a darker and certainly weirder breed. If you pulled it off right, making your sis likable to the player you could definitely pull it off... and you know that feature would get talked about one whole hell of a lot online.

The last point is interesting... but as a way of leveling up would be hard to do. You would almost have to be a vampire like 200 years ago then play through essentially your life. However historical games that span a ton of history... well have they even been done? Nvm, I was thinking about leveling for a good while after reading your post, and what I came up with is this... 'blood points' based like xp that other vampires you kill drop, not in people you eat (cause really this just gives you an incentive to go on a feeding frenzy... this I think kills the stealth aspect of the game). In a lot of stories drinking the blood of an older/more powerful vamp gives you a power increase. I could see the story taking you on a killing spree through the upper ranks of the vampires.

Legacy of Kain. If you can, just buy all of them. It's worth it. The story, voice acting, game-play, and setting is pretty much perfect.
I'm not sure about other vampire games. I only play on consoles... There was going to be a game called Harker which looked pretty sick, you should look it up on GameTrailers.

So what im geting.... other then an extream hate for twilight, is a game that Bethesda or Rockstar could pull off without a problem.
We need something sandboxy, with what I hope is a new spin on leveling or powerup. I personally would like a story with multiple paths however, I want a massive amount of side quest options with enought light story to draw you in.

What I'm hearing is a GTA-esque sandbox where you go around being a vampire, mixed with Hitman where you can blend in ok until you do something unusual. And what I hope I hear is you want more Anne Rice (novel) vampires that are completely bad ass but try acting human for the most part.

On-topic: Don't know if it's been covered already, but having covers of sorts. Start side jobs or businesses, open orphanages. War on rival clans later on in the game is obvious. Or defending territory if you become a "supreme" vampire and live alone and want to stay that way.

Glad you liked my ideas! No I have not played Masquerade, or any sort of vampire game, I don't think I've even ever heard of it. I like the idea of the parents becoming vampires, they hate you for it, etc - I could imagine that being a prequel, a la MGS 3 (giving more time to explain that well with nice pacing, then enough time for my other ideas to work). I think the sister thing would be weird, but it would be sort of like quicksilver/scarlet witch in marvel, or what i would imagine happening to say superman and supergirl - at 1000 years, who else is going to be around but them?

You're right, my last point is unfair to the sneaky approach. I like the killing older vampires thing, but (obviously) I would hope there was good reason. Maybe your character wants to rid the world of vampires - maybe he's powerhungry. Who knows, but there are definitely lots of good ideas running around this thread, I hope someone somewhere picks up on them.

I did mention buying a 'club' and using it as a front for vampires, yes... it would be even cooler if you could vary it up with orphanages and such, that's actually a really good addition.

It would be also very cool to have an ability late in the game to get vampires to swear fealty to you, this would be a good use for the persuasion, seduction, and intimidation feats. In fact I'm going to add that to my list. (Don't worry you get credit).

lol i wouldn't call it easy... i mean did you read the 20 points in the first post?

The Oblivion vampirism was awesome, however what sucks is that you could only feed on sleeping characters.

Also, just wait. CCP are working on WOD:Online, which will be fantastic and will allow you to play as a Vampire.

I'm not totally sold on the concept of having a vampire MMO to be perfectly honest... even one based the WOD system (same one masquerade was based on for the uninitiated).

Here's why in a nutshell:
1) part of the sandbox allure to me is being able to become a vampire in a world that is predominantly human, in an MMO like that it would be filled with others just like you and kill some of the "specialness" of being a vampire (when everyone's got super powers then no one will be special!)
2)grind, rinse, repeat kills fun for me in a game this is more my distaste for the genre though.
3)inevitably in a vampire mmo you are going to have twilight fans play... *shudder* (unless of course their twilight mmo comes out, then they can go fester in their corner of the web)

however this doesn't mean I wouldn't buy the game and play it for a while... I just don't think it has the same potential as a sandbox game as per my description.

Trust me, normally I would completely agree with you, especially on the grind part, however it is CCP doing this title and keep in mind, they did Eve Online, so they know something about player run economies and politics, which is what World of Darkness has always been about.

The Human-To-Supernatural ratio is definitely something they will have to consider, but I trust they will be able to make it work. As for the Twilight fanboys and girls, a few minutes in the dark world of V:TR (quick note, the MMO will be based on the Requiem, not the Masquerade) and they will quickly cancel their accounts or drastically change their views on what a true vampire is.

The Bloodrayne games are pretty good and you could probably get them for steam or something. On a side note vampires can sparkle... after they drained a stripper.
