You know, it's funny.

There's a lot of doom and gloom surrounding RPGs nowadays. Hell, I'm as guilty as anyone of being pessimistic about the future of my favorite genre.

But, hey, I've got to admit that this has been a pretty good year. We've got a new Final Fantasy, Devil Survivor 2, Tales of Graces, Tales of the Abyss on 3DS, Disgaea 3 on Vita, Xenoblade Chronicles... and down the road, we have Kingdom Hearts 3DS, The Last Story, Pokemon Black and White 2... next year we'll see Ni no Kuni, Tales of Xillia...

WRPG fans also get treated to a new Mass Effect, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dawnguard...

Is it just me, or is this a really kickass year to be an RPG fan? What games did you enjoy playing? What are you looking forward to?

And you didn't even mention Persona 4 The Golden.

As for myself, I don't have a 3DS or PS Vita so no Devil Survivor or P4 Golden, and I also sold my Wii thinking Xenoblade and all those would never make it over here. All that leaves me with is Tales of Graces and all the old games off the PS Store. I'm not super enthused by this year's lineup, but I am very glad Tales of Xillia is coming, and I will continue to gnaw on my arm until Persona 5 is announced.

Looks like a good year for JRPG fans, me on the other hand have yet to be persuaded to get anything recent.

I've noticed RPGs have been great too, after so long of nothing of interest to me personally. I haven't seen any upcoming RPGs that look good to me though. I might take a look at the new Tales game, I hear that series is good. I guess we'll see the 2nd expansion for Skyrim before too long as well. Hopefully it will follow the pattern of the last two Elder Scrolls games and be the larger of the two expansions, and include a whole new environment. Although, The Soul Cairn and Forgotten Vale were already pretty massive, even if the former was pretty empty.

That'll be good, too. :) Although IDK if I'll buy Golden, I still have the original game.

But, just goes to show, looking at these few responses; there are a ton of awesome games coming out, and many that have already.

Well, I'm working through my third version of Persona 3 right now, so to each their own. Although if you don't have a Vita, I wouldn't go out of my way to get one just for one game. I was lucky enough to have a roommate with a PSP lying around for P3P.

What I'm looking forward to is the next upcoming year or two when some of these kickstarter RPGs like Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns and Dead State start coming out.
Agreed totally on Wasteland 2, on Shadowrun eh maybe still don't know much about it and for Dead State well I've never been one for those types of games. Still I think the next 2 years are going to be awesome. I'm personally the most excited for Divinity Original Sin.

Most of the titles you stated are JRPG's

And the western ones... Mass Effect 3 screwed itself over in the end, Studio 38 has died a rather public death, and Dawnguard... Well that one is ok.

A better title for this thread would be: Good Year for JRPG fans.

Personally I am waiting for some of my Kickstarters to mature in 2013.

Edit: You forgot about Legends of Grimrock.

Well, I agree 90% with this, but I'd like to point out that KoA was just Blandness: The Generic Fantasy from what I saw. As much as I regret to say it, I'm not affected in any negative way by the death of Studio 38. There might even be a glimmer of happiness in me.

Wasn't that more of an adventure game, though? I have yet to look more into it. From what I saw so far, however, I'll be getting it for sure.

Yeah, I'll forget it. I'd rather get it on GOG. For the record, I made that decision before the Steam sale was on. Also, my budget is stretched rather thin at the moment.

So Captcha is not only sentient but it can also predict the future?

Ah I forgot about that game. I think you sent me a link to the demo before but I never got around to it. Unfortunately my main computer was broken when it got here so all I have is a crappy laptop that can only play stuff from GOG. Really need to get around to that when I get my computer.

Don't forget incoming Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 enhanced editions.
I can't believe I forgot about those but I think the best part about those is they are in the process of making another studio to specialize in isometric RPGs.
