Symbian is the largest mobile OS in the world, with a 41% market share around the world in the second quarter of this year, more than double that of even their nearest competitor, RIM's BlackBerry platform. Basically, it's been fragmented as hell for ages, but it still completely curbstomps all of its competitors in sales figures - although it's slipping downhill.
It's slipping downhill FAST, and, more importantly, developers are not excited about it. Symbian is a dead horse. Nokia is trying with maemo, but it's also not getting much attention from anyone.

Symbian's dominance in the market has more to do with the fact that it was around before the iPhone and Android, and with how well Nokia knows how to sell phones with it, than with the current market situation. Nokia is kinda lost in the smartphone market today.
