Google had a hiccup and 40% of the internet users still wouldn't use anything else and decided to just wait it out instead. That's quite impressive!
Most probably just thought their internet and/or router was being a ***** and spent several minutes clicking refrsh.

In other news, Bing also stopped working for 5 minutes at the same time.
Well yeah, Bing can't Google stuff any better than the rest of us if Google is down :p

Google is highly decentralised in many ways, but clearly, there must be some kind of flaw in their systems for it to be possible to cripple so much of it.

Incedentally, around the time this problem is said to have happened, I could get to google services, but not hotmail... Was it just google that failed, or was this more extensive?
Undramatic version: a very massive and unified update to the central software core of google that cannot be done part by part at different locations thous shifting the loads? something to do with hiw the servers interact with eachother thus cant work with half servers updated only?
Dramatic version: google has achieved sentience and needed some time to calculate its own being before learning to shoft enough power to the services so the humasn wouldnt know about it?

Is anyone else reminded of that Twilight Zone episode "The monsters are due on Maple Street"?
i think the theme has fit very well. though it would be nice to see as a social experiment a real outage of ALL search engines for, say, 24 hours, and the panic it would bring. maybe we woudl value our libraries more (admitedly im guilty of considering internet a superior alternative for anything nonscientific (trust me, scientific stuff is very scarse on the web still, it apepars to ahve everything but really doesnt have much to begin with.

If google would be down when i wanted to search, i would just wait too. im not going to die for waiting hanf and hour and i got stuff to do without google too. Besides, no other search engine has managed to consistently find results anyway. i tried using yahoo, i tried bing, i still wonder why they havent shut thier doors like GFWL did.
