the big guys stands up to the even bigger guy!
Google stand to lose profit, but gain morality here, its a nice call though as the dent wont be as big as many suspect due to a smallish market share compared to other Chinese search engines

I feel sorry for people in china who get restricted from so much. The internet is a valuable thing these days, and something we probably all take for granted.
I don't know, is it taken for granted when you pay for it? But still, the situation there sucks.

That's not what I mean. What i'm referring to is the way the internet offers us so much in terms of convenience and free information. You can find a shedload of stuff on the internet, much easier than you could without it.

I bet they are gonna get kicked out, but, to be honest I think they have done right thing. At the end of the day you cannot be pushed about and hacked and not expect to retaliate.

If you get no help from the government...and they breech human rights then I am all for this

Glad to see Google doing this. It may be a profit loss, but as I recall they are about making it easy to find things, not specially catering and giving out information a country wants them to give out, which is what China is trying to enforce.

Go, go, Google Rangers!

Well done Google, China just think they can bully businesses around to follow their crazy rules. Fools. :)

Google is number one pretty much everywhere but China, the biggest stain on its rep was agreeing to censor stuff for the Chinese Government. They lose out on a market they have a small share in, and gain massive credibility everywhere else; seems a pretty smart move to me.

Hurting your shareholders bottomline is never a smart thing. As a share holder of Google i dont care if they had to censor themselves in china! so long as they are getting business from them. Since when does a search engine require 'credibility' to be good? oO

while i admire there courage to stand up for there beliefs, it doesnt take an expert to see this as a fiscal blunder especially since china is probably the fastest growing market. So either this politically motivated ploy will guarantee more business in the free world or they would have shot themselves in the foot when some other company make crazy money off them.

all i know is time to sell some google!

I can't believe I am saying this about one of the scariest Conglomerates ever, but nice one Google!

Fuck you China!
Wrong. Fuck you Chinese government. I have nothign against the people of China, and they are the true China. China is enslaved by it's communist government.

That said, my respect for Google has just risen drastically.

I completely agree with this. Not only was google NEVER the most popular search engine to use in China overall (that would be Baidu), they also came under a lot of criticism when they agreed to start censoring results in China.

Got to love Google for this. They took a lot of stick for caving into China for easily before, I'm glad to see they had the courage to admit they were wrong and cease bending to the whims of the blatantly corrupt Chinese government.

China is a horrible, horrible place right now. The last thing we need to be doing is encouraging them to leave it that way. The truth must be heard!

Ah, yes. Very good point there, although I would't trust everything I find on the net, it has helped me countless times.

How is it that China expects to look like a nice country with all this censorship going on? What exactly are they trying to hide, and why? The internet is like 5% video games and 90% porn, so why worry about the other 5%?

You pretty much answered your own question, who wants to use a search filter that censors stuff in one part of the world? What's to stop them from censoring in other parts of the world? At least know we know with all the money they lose there wont be a conspiracy behind them. When you're the worlds most popular search engine you gotta keep a good image, bravo to you Google.

You have no idea how much respect for google this has given me.
A for-profit company taking a stand against injustice despite loss of business?

Huge props.

This comment makes me sick.
to me it reads "I don't care what injustices occur, as long as I'm better off."
Before I severely take issue with it, please tell me i've been mistaken.

Well to be fair, China started it when they trained their up and coming military IT specialists to attempt to hack into the G-mail servers, and got busted.

China is a freaking foreign policy time bomb. It's like watching a petulant, self-entitled child try their hand at international politics.

Honestly, we have to all hope that China implodes internally (Probably sparked by their incredible female population deficit thanks to the one child policy), before they start the next World War. It's not right around the corner, but in 10-20 years it's highly possible.
